I?m pretty new to this stuff, so I?m sure this is a dumb question?I?ve just backed up about 25 movies (over the last few weeks) on Philips DVD+R media I got for a good deal at a large retail chain. I need to buy more blanks and there is now a good deal on the Philips DVD-R at the same store.

My burner will handle both ?R and +R. Is there any reason to use one vs. the other? All of the Philips burned well, so I?d like to stick that brand since I know it?s quality but I?m just curious if there is any advantage/disadvantage of ?R vs. +R.

TIA.

Hi,

I once read that +R's where better in some small way (can't remember exactly.) I think it was a slight burn speed and reliability advantage, but now I find both types are very similar & real cheap too.

As long as you buy decent quality media that you and your burner are happy with you should be fine.

A good site to read up on media FAQ's can be found here..

Here is a list of who manufature's those Phillips
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01)
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPN R00)
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RITEK R01)
Philips DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG F01)
Philips DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPN R01)
Philips DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG E01)
Philips DVD+R 8x (Philips 081)
Philips DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02)
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Philips DVD+RW 4x (PHILIPS 041)
Philips DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Philips DVD-R 8x (CMC MAG AE1)

So you see you may have received the Ricojpn or Phillips disk before, but will more than likely end up with CMC Mag's if you go with the -R's. That wouldn't be good at all... Run you disks through DVD Identifier http://home.scarlet.be/~ping3828/dvd_identifier.zip and see who manufatured those Phillips you have now.

I ran the utility. The Philips DVD+R 1-8x I?ve been using are CMC Magnetics E01.

I?ve backed up using all 25 and have had very good results.

Thanks for the info. Very cool utility!

Hello mcStagger: Be cautious on those cmags. I have used a few of those cmags with the same code and they seem ok,but I burn them at 2.4x and don't I put anything important on them. Many reports of them having a very short life span, less than 6 months from quite a few members.

If you run into any playback issues or want to re-rip them for extra copies and they give you crc errors, then switching to better media should be the first thing to do.

Good Luck and burn on!
