Well here it is, I recently Formated a new HD and im kinda miffed at what codecs I should install. On my last HD I had many codecs including Divx&Xvid and even though I had those codecs up to date those type of movies still wouldnt play.
So instead of just dl every codec I come across I humbly request your help.

Just a side note im running windows 98 *I know upgrade* im not sure if codecs will have trouble running on this os or not. Also im sorry if this kind of post is kinda repetitive.

One other thing I did read the sticky at the top and am willing to follow the guid but the reason i havent as of yet is because the guid is kinda old, should I follow the guid still?

It is not good practice to just download and install every codec that you come across on this planet.
Try to play the movie with the MediaPlayer. If it does not play, it will automatically connect to the Internet and try to locate the required codec. There are also several free analysis tools with which you can check which codec is used in a given movie, so you know which one to look for.

Thx for the advice and link, im wondering if its a codec issue at all, a notice a huge perfomance drop if a raise my resolution. Is it possible that its my crappy pc.

You can Get away with ouly installing One codec for Watching movies on your PC and that is the "FFDShow Decoder" which can decode allmost every Format there is includeing all Mpeg-4/DivX/XviD Formats and Mpeg-1/2 and Dolby AC3 audio ect...It sure beats haveing to install a New codec for every different Video and Audio Format which can cause more Problems than it solves....

but you might want to install xvid. if you want to convert to dvd. or encode to xvid.

if you ever encounter with realvideo get real alternative.

media player classic is the one best player around if not the best.
its got some audio filter build in. aac/ac3 etc. and built in splitters.
mkv/ dirac (don't worry if you don't know what this is)

Well I installed FFDShow and now when I open the file realplayer gives me this error.

and when I open it in Divx it plays the file but in sort of slow motion.

ffdshow doesn't support realvideo.
so you might want real alternative. you don't have to install real player.

take a look at the video decoder configuration.
its support most things, but not everything.

Actually FFDShow supports RV10 and RV20 decoding. However I don't think that they were talking about real media files, just using real player.

What build of FFDShow? Perhaps try a different one.
