I'm a n00b, using shrink & nero with a Memorex DVD+/-RW True8XI [FW UWS4] burner. Shrink worked fine, but fails at the burning stage, with error exerpt below:

I have set shrink to 4360mb, have UGWS4 firmware, 4.71.2 ASPI. Memorex (I know.. cmc-mag) media. Not sure about DMA/PIO.

Any tips on troubleshooting? I am suspecting a bad drive. Will re-attempt at 1x with fuji

I guess I'll start in on the DMA problem... I will install an 80-pin cable, & check the BIOS for DMA enabled. There is no option in Device Manager to toggle DMA/PIO.

Yeah, I think the DMA might be your issue. If you are running XP, all you have to do usually is uninstall the burner, then reboot the computer and let Windows find it on its own.

Thanks everyone,

After changing the IDE cable to an 80pin I still could not verify that the controller was using DMA rather than PIO! So I dug a little deeper and discovered that I had a Shuttle AN35 board with an nForce2 chipset from nVidia. DOH! The nForce2 IDE controller did not display the IDE channels in Device "Mangler" (not on tabs in Properties either). Ended up just dumping thenVidia driver & substituting a M$ one. That did it! DMA was verified & I finished the backup job that aborted.... All is well!!

Oh yeah...one more thing....

The c-Mag media was the disk that came bundled with the drive. Memorex Drive comes with Memorex media (of course). The successful burn was done on a Fuji at 2x instead of 8x (bought a 25-spindle). I've had this thing for 8 months now and am just now getting around to burning a DVD.

Jiarby indicated he used some driver change on AN35 shuttle board to get the CR-R working. JRB coould you elaborate on that? I have an AN35 and it won't burn a disk - seems like it just seeks and seeks and never goes anywhere.

hey dean...

In the AN35 BIOS you can modify PIO/DMA settings. I just wanted to verify that I did not specified PIO ONLY in my BIOS (I had not).

My fix ended up being deleting the nVidia driver for the IDE controller & using the default Windows (I am on XP Pro SP2) one. Once that happend then you can see the primary & secondary channels & set their modes. I don't think you should use the nVidia IDE driver. I also verified that I had the latest drive firmware, which I did already.

I DID replace a standard 40pin IDE ribbon cable with a high density 80-pin one, which helps out the DMA. I don't know of you can get DMA throughput with the old style cable.

I'll bet that nVidia driver is your problem too on the AN35

Thanks for the response - I appreciate it. I too use the 80 cable. I actually found that the newest version of the Nvidia Unified Driver fixed the problem - thank goodness as I had given up using the CD burner on this box for over a year thinking the AN35 had failed.
