DL dvd writing problems

Trying to find the best way to backup a movie I've expirienced the following problems for DL discs:
(1) Nero 6.6.0.8a after burning fails to verificate the compilation and the disc skips some sections during playing.
(2) Nero 6.6.0.8a after diskcopy fails to verificate the compilation, but the disc in most cases seems to be ok.
(3) dvd decrypter. latest version, after creating an image and then burn the compilation with the same tool causes the disc to freeze during playing.
DVD burners used: NEC 3520 / Plextor 716 UX on firewire adapter
discs used: Philips DL +R certified 2.4 X/ Traxdata DL + R certified 4X.

After theese facts I decided to stick with single layer discs.
Does anyvody has a better procedure to advise, or any other tool, for making working copies?
