Hi jer,

What speed pcu do you have in your desktop? How much free space do you have on your hdd and have you defragmented rescently? Have you removed spyware/adware lately?

Since you're going to upgrade your os anyway why not upgrade to XP?

I'm not for sure on changing from FAT32 to NTSF and don't want to tell you something wrong. I would start another thread asking how it's done.

You shouldn't have to mess with drivers or firmware after os upgrade.

I'm still puzzled as to why the long burn times. Should be 13-15 min at 4x. Lets start with that.

not positive about the pcu speed, but i believe it is a pentium III, dell dimension desktop.
i don't think i can use my laptop's reinstall xp disc to upgrade my laptop, but i do have a win2k disc that should work to install win 2k.
i never see 4x on burn, i am lucky to see 2.5x on burn, which would be fine with me if i could get the encoding portion down to 15 minutes or so, an hour seems way too long for encoding, no idea why that is taking so long.
if i use one drive to decrypt, then shrink/decrypt or if i use two drives and just start shrink, both ways the encoding portion takes an hour, then the burning takes about 20 minutes or longer, lucky to see 2.5x, no matter what media i use so far.

I did some more research on FAT32 and NTFS. NTFS is not available on win 95 or 98 os and would require win2k or XP. This could be a reason for slow encode times. I know for video encoding NTFS is recommended. I still suggest starting another thread explaining your situation and setup to get more members involved that know more about this area than I. I can still help you with most problems concerning your litey.

I haven't used win98 in a long time but I think you can click start, right click my computer, click properties, at the bottom it should tell you under computer, cpu and memory.

i appreciate the help.
i havmy op system on c drive, and my music and files on a separate 60GB hard drive.
i defragged both last week, and run zero spyware/adaware/avg/zone alarm.
only thing running while burning is zonealarm.

maybe if i can get win2k to load using this disc it will help my encoding time.
what exactly is happening during the encoding process that would be making it take so long?

i'll try to post a new thread specifically for the long-ass encoding time, but the only advice i've found is check dma settings, which is different for win98, and it says dma is checked, but i'm not sure how to actually determine if it is working that way during burning.
i've defragged, checked dma, upgraded firmware, gotten good media....not sure why my encoding time is taking forever.
if it is because of the fat32, maybe win2k will fix it.
i want to stop using the laptop burner and use the desktop burner so the laptop burner doesn't go out at an inopportune time due to excessive use.
i appreciate the help.
i'll post a new thread.
maybe if you make an appearance in the new thread, that will help get it started and people will at least take the time to check it out.
thx

I'm sorry we've hit a bump in the road. I think you will still need to convert to NTFS after os upgrade at least on the hdd you are useing for video encoding. Your cpu speed could definately be causing the slow encode times. PIII probably between 600-800 mhz. 1.3 ghz or higher (really 2.0 ghz) recommended. When you start the new thread make sure you let them know your os (win98), FAT32 file system, memory (512 mb), cpu (PIII), dvdrw (lite-on SOHW-1673S), and software being used (dvd shrink and nero). Hopefully with some help from other members we can get you running smoothly.

jer29,

You're not going to get your encode times down to 15 min with a P III cpu even if you don't use any of the quality settings in shrink. 1 hour really sounds about right for that cpu. I'm more concerned with burn times. I'm curious to know if you can burn the verbatums you have ordered at 4x. Just curious, what are the specs on your laptop? Cpu and memory?

If you are more concerned about speed, make sure you don't have advanced analysis or any quality enhancements checked under quality settings in dvd shrink as these will both add to time required to encode.

I'm more concerned with quality than speed of my backups. I use the best bakup software under $2000 (RB/CCE) to do my backups and it takes an average of 2 hours to encode a vidio folder with about 7,000 to 7,500 mb and as you see in my sig my cpu is at 3.2 ghz and I have 1 gb memory. I edit my vidio folders leaving a working menu, deleted/extended scenes, bloopers, and sometimes the making of. I get rid of warning screens, previews, and trailers.

i'm not sure about the laptop specs, or the desktop specs....can't remember.
from what i remember, the desktop is 512k memory, p3 (i think), 40 gb hard drive and 60 gb hard drive (op sys on c drive), dvd rom, lite-on 1673 burner.

the laptop is a dell inspiron 5100, i think. i was assuming the dvd burner wasn't that great, but i don't know. the laptop burner is only for dvd +r.

i don't use any enhancement or quality settingsi'm still getting used to shrink/decrypter, just started using the forward/reverse to cut scenes and trailers from the main movie.
i haven't even checked out the Nero that came with the burner.

would i have to get a wole new motherboard if i upgrade my cpu?
can i add to my cpu, or do i have to replace it?

i think i should upgrade from win98 to win2k.
if i use the disc and upgrade, and put the op system on my c drive, will i lose all my files on the d drive if i change my c and d drive from fat32 to ntfs?
thx

Ok, now I have to eat crow. I had never used DVD Shrink without at least checking advanced analysis (I don't use shrink anymore but when I did I checked advanced analysis and max smooth). Well just for $hits and giggles I encoded a movie only 103 min long without any quality settings and the encode only took 7 min. So I guess a PIII could do it in under 30 min without any quality settings checked. I wouldn't be satisfied with the quality though. Thats just me.

for now, i'm not that worried about the quality settings....maybe when i'm more proficient and actually have some idea what i'm doing i'll be a bit more picky.
until then, i'd be happy getting the encoding time down to 15 minutes.

what do you think about upgrading from win98 to win 2k?
will i lose data on the d drive if i change that from fat32 to ntfs?
will i lose all info on my c drive when i upgrade the operating system there and change from fat32 to ntfs?

I don't think so to both but it would be a good idea to double check.

I'm going to try to get somebody else involved in this thread that is more knowledgeable than me to answer some of your questions.

i found this link to a bbmayo thread with tons of good info

How to convert a FAT volume or a FAT32 volume to NTFS
Note Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion is minimal, we recommend that you perform a backup of the data on the volume that you want to convert before you start the conversion.

To convert an existing FAT or FAT32 volume to NTFS, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert: convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
convert e: /fs:ntfs
Note: If the operating system is on the drive that you are converting, you will be prompted to schedule the task when you restart the computer because the conversion cannot be completed while the operating system is running. When you are prompted, click YES.
3. When you receive the following message at the command prompt, type the volume label of the drive that you are converting, and then press ENTER: The type of the file system is FAT. Enter the current volume label for drive drive letter .....
4. When the conversion to NTFS is complete, you receive the following error message at the command prompt: Conversion complete
5. Quit the command prompt.

i'm going to try to upgrade from win98 to win2k tonight
i will try to swap both my hard drives from fat32 to ntfs

the question i still have is why is my encoding time an hour or more???
is that due to the cpu?
i'll check my cpu speed tonight and get specs on both my laptop and desktop.
stopping by fedex after work to pick up the verbatims from newegg, gonna check to see where they are made, hoping for japan
i appreciate the help.

my previous PC was a P3 600 with 384MB RAM. It used to take 45mins to an hour i think. I used (and still use) DVD Shrink , with dvd decrypter sometimes..
(I have not once used the quality settings, never found the need - but that's just my opinion).
This new PC i have encodes most films in approx 10 to 15mins. if disc is scratched (rare luckily), maybe as long as 49mins as the dvd-rom drive struggles to get the data off. I do movie only btw..

Hi creaky,

Boy am I glad to see somebody come to my rescue. We were getting into some territory that I wasn't real familiar with. Welcome aboard.

jer29,

You will have to do some research on your make and model of mobo to find out how much you can upgrade, which socket and so on. Probably new mobo for P4.

i don't know if Dell machines can be motherboard swapped.
i myself was happy with the speeds i was getting, but old PC was playing up so finally upgraded. My setup was real cheap , it's a very very quick machine.

my case with supplied m/board was £60ish
512mb ram was £50ish
CPU was £80ish

I'm sure the total was £240 but i for the life of me can't remember what else i bought, the postage couldn't have been that much (my memory is so crap)

that was about it. So you can shop around and be surprised as to what you can get if you choose the bits yourself..

i've gotta make do with what i have.
i could add some memory if it would help, or swap the cpu or mobo if i get a good deal.

so, it is the cpu that is causing the encoding to take an hour?

i 'think' so. what i do know is it's CPU grunt that you need for encoding, not extra RAM. i'll have a search for other ppl's encoding times 2moro (gotta get some sleep now).
ps there were one or 2 Dell experts posting around here last week, but guess what i can't remember who it was. I'll do a quick search

no worries, i'm in the UK so need some sleep as have to get up at 0530. I'll check for any posts when i get to work but i'm sure there are others who will chip in to the thread in the meantime. The Verb's are a good choice (as long as they're datalifeplus).. What i won't recommend for you is + or - format, that's up to you and compatability (my Sony is a rebadged Lite-on), i just happened to have used 99% of -R since i started this dvd burning lark. I could have started out with +R just as easily.
