No but I doubt that will speed anything up. I hate to say this but you're in a world of hurt on that desktop with only a PII. It's pretty obvious why your laptop times are so much faster. Cpu speed has a lot to do with encode times. I wouldn't recommend dumping much more money into your desktop since you can buy or build a much faster pc for less money than you would spend upgrading yours. I'm not trying to put it down only trying to save you some time and money. It's just not up to the chore of encoding any faster.

I'm not sure about win98 but with XP, to find your cpu speed click start, right click my computer, click properties, should say under computer at the bottom. Good luck.

i found a freeware program for cpu-z
says i have a pentium 3 800 mhz, 512 mb ram
just checked my desktop with a freeware program to check the cpu:
pentium 3, 800 Mhz
512mb ram
win 98 on 40gb c drive
60 gb hard drive for mp3s and files
not sure why when i right click 'my computer' and look at properties it says P II Intel MMX Technology
seems like it was supposed to be p3, and that freeware program says it is p3 800 mhz
this is the link
http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php#download

should encoding take an hour with 800 mhz?
hoping the win 2k ntfs will help.
guess i'll see if i can get the win 2k disc to upgrade my op sys

the verbatims came in, dvd +r

mcc-003-000
1x, 2.4x, 4x, 6x-8x

i'm guessing they are ok if they are from mitsubishi chemical corp

i have no idea how to change the actual burn speed, laptop usually goes around 2.5x, desktop is lucky to get around 1.5x

Wanted to clear this up, you meant nero recode 2 right. Nero burning rom can't compress or encode vidio, only burn. You have to use nero recode 2 for encoding and compressing.

i think it might be time for a new computer when the proper funds are available my friend...with something along the lines of a pentium 4 with anywhere from 1.8ghz and higher would suffice for faster encoding times.

good buy on the media by the way, those are top notch...not THE best in my opinion, but very close to it~ :) hehe
but definitely worth noting~ :)

good luck

guess i'll have something for my Christmas list,
my wife is completely computer illiterate,
hope she doesn't freak out at having to get a new computer

i guess around thanksgiving i'll try to find a forum where people who know how to build a comp from scratch can post tehir build-list

fry's should have everything on sale at the day after thanksgiving sale.

and here i thought getting a burner for my desktop would save wear and tear on the laptop.
guess not

Hi triple 6,

Do you prefer TY's over those verbatums, just curious because my scans are better with the verbs, not that the TY scans are bad.

@ mort,

my preference is very MARGINAL at best between the TYs and the Verbs~ so, i've noticed very slight, if any difference between the two when i run my scans, i have just had MORE experience with my TYs than i have the Verbs, that is the only discernable difference as to whether i would rank one above the other~ :)

good day to you buddy~

just got in to work, will catch up on page3 after a strong cup of tea...

as for win98 mis-stating the cpu, i've seen this over the years too. Glad you found a util to tell you the speed. One of the best progs is wcpuid. My other previous pc was a p3 800 with 512mb ram, it wasn't noticably quicker at encoding than my p3 600. the athlon 2800 - my god what a difference!.

as for XP, it's only the last month or 2 that i went back to XP (used it on my olde world Celeron 466 & a dual Celeron 466 and a P3 600E back when XP first came out; was still happy with 98SE so got rid of XP); as for NTFS i knew of it and how to convert between FAT & NTFS but have just never found the need. Even recently didn't find the need to change from FAT32 but thought i'd better modernise a bit. (I usually stick with technology/methods for a v long time).

I have grown to actually like XP a lot, i guess it's mainly to do with the fact that my PC is so responsive. (my work PC is a slow P4 2.66 with 512mb ram and XP).

As for the Verbatim's - very good choice. I will start trying out the new 16x Verb's soon. I'll probably try burning 8x for a while, but no higher than that.

Anyway, i'm not sure if Dell desktop cases are standard ATX or not so don't know if you can upgrade motherboard easily. But cases are dirt cheap now so i guess that's a non-issue. Here's mine - http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/creaky/P1010112.jpg

i was upgrading frm win 98 to win 2k, but i was too scared to finish the installation.
i got a 4 page upgrade report from win 2k saying some items may not be compatible with win 2k, including:
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce2 Ti
network adapter: Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter (NC100 v2)
PCI System Management Bus
Printer: HP Deskjet 930c
Sound, video, and game controllers
and
System Devices: PnPBIOS Extension

also said:
AVG
Zone Alarm
DVD movie Player Software

would need to reinstall adaptec cd creator

is all that stuff really not gonna work with win2k????

your network card should be ok ('should' be ok!), your printer
should be autodetected. Basically, prior to upgrading, just download
any new drivers for the stuff stated and maybe burn to a cd in case
you can't get your internet access sorted to obtain the drivers etc
afterwards, but if you're unsure whether you'll lose something,
maybe hold off until you're happier with it..

...which of course would mean that we'd need to find you a solution
to your original problem :)

- i've actually forgotten what the original problem was. If it was
the encoding times, i think a few of us who replied said that your
times were ok for the setup you have.... so it would seem your setup
is working correctly..

i guess having a dvd rom drive cuts down on the time i'd have to run decrypter to get the files to the hard drive before running shrink...
but that encoding time is just insane.
took over 4 hours to use deep quality settings on return of the jedi

i guess i'll stick with burning the majority on the laptop.
no idea how to increase the burn rate on laptop, usually get a 2.5x burn rate at best, regardless of media.
laptop burner is hitachi dk23fb-40
burns dvd +r only
can i use decrypter to change the bookmark on that burner to dvd rom?

maybe turn off the deep encoding options or whatever they're called.
I have not once needed them in 500 off burns so far (just my
personal opinion as i can never tell the difference, even in fast
moving scenes or closeup scenes - i do movie only backups so the
least compression i ever get would be say 75 to 85% of the
original).

As your hardware is limiting you i think the best bet is to
just try one movie with default no-frills encoding in dvd shrink.
Watch some or all of the movie and see what you think. Leave it til
you have a go-faster machine for the enhancements etc.

As for laptop speed of 2.4, that's usually down to firmware of
burner i think, ie it doesn't know enough about a given set of media
do uses the default speed i think.

Just my opinion, i have a very fast setup, burn lots & lots of
films, but personally don't see a difference in quality...

last night was the first time i used the deep quality settings. i just wanted to run it overnight and see how long it would take, and a friend wanted to see if the surround sound would still work on the copy in the home theatre system.
normal burn takes an hour to encode then about an hour to burn, using two drives at once on desktop. the deep quality setting took about 4.5 hours. i didn't watch enough to tell a difference in pic quality.

can i change the bookmark setting on my laptop hitachi with decrypter or do i need to find a different program to do it?

you can d/load a lite-on specific util for setting the booktype (i'm sure i recall you have a lite-on). as for audio, it is unaffected by copying, ie if you select only 5.1 you will get a 100% exact copy of the original 5.1 soundtrack

i found a guide to using decrypter to set the bookmark on my lite on (desktop)

but it seems i will be forced to mainly rely on the quicker laptop's hitachi burner.
will decrypter change the bookmark for the hitachi burner, or is there a different program for that?

the link under #12 in this bbmayo post
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136

shows how decrypter can be used to change the booktype for Plextor, NEC, BenQ, LG, LITE-ON, Nu Tech/QSI and Ricoh Burners.

i guess i need to find another way to change the booktype on my hitachi burner, you know how i could do that?

oh i see, i've not used that before (or burnt discs with decrypter as a) i only use -R discs, and b) i use Nero for burning. The rare time i've booktyped (it was probably only the once) i used a specific liteon util.

my understanding seems to be correct that it was down to specific drive makers to write booktype utils for different burners and that not all makes have these utils;

as for your hitachi dk23fb-40 - this appears to be your hard drive. find the name of your burner and there's a chance we can find a util for you
