To derermine burner make and model with XP o.s. (win98 and 2k may be similar), click start, right click my computer, click properties, click hardware, click device manager, double click dvd/cd-rom drives.

i didn't update to win2k, yet.
not sure if i'm gonna have a problem with compatability with those items listed.
guess i'll have to use my laptop burner until; i can upgrade to a new desktop.
the laptop urner is a HL-DT-ST DVD +RW GCA-4040N
anyone know how i can change the booktype to make the dvd +r i burn be read as a dvd rom by regular dvd players?
decrypter could change the booktype for the desktop's lite on burner, but i'm not sure if i can do that with the LG

- that quote was from Jan 2004 though. The latest firmware i can find is C113 or something, i think (so far) the best you can do with that drive is region-free it to play all region dvds. Gonna keep looking though...

i found this one last night and installed the newest (i hope) firmware

LG HL-DT-ST GWA-4040N (GCA-4040N)
RPC1 Firmwares based on B107 (DELL) Windows, 1.19 (HP) Windows, and 1.02 (ARIMA) Windows.
And pick the last one,, 1.02 (Arima )windows.
It will work.
haven't tried to backup anything since i installed the new firmware, hope i didn't screw it up, i just started seeing better read and write speeds, no idea why.
can't find any info on changing the booktype on the gca 4040n, wish i could, since i'm having to use the laptop for most backups

cool. Nice link - the Dangerous Brothers sure know their firmware.
It's looking like there isn't any way of booktyping your drive though...

@jer2911tx - just tried KProbe2 - never used it before. I had just read somewhere it's apparently more accurate at validating media codes than progs such as dvd identifier etc. Either way i just noticed it's for a booktype util built-in. It might be worth you downloading it, you never know it might support your drive...

i'll check it out.
my liteon burner is kinda unstable, at least i'm thinking that's it.
the website said it was compatible with win 98, but the box it came in says win 98se, which i don't have.
sometimes when i run decrypter or shrink, after i close it and eject the dvd, i get the blue screen of death and have to hit escape.
i think the dvds are coming out ok with th everbatims, will check newest burn tonight since wife is out of town.

@jer2911tx - i very much doubt it's due to the minor differences between Win98 & Win98SE. Sounds like you're making a bit of progress though so far
