You can use pretty much any hdd as long as it's compatible (or rather it fits into the expansion bay) so no you don't need a brand new one. You can't use a copied Psx trigger disc unless you have a method of booting backups.

As far as i know you can't use exploits for a slim ps2, only the bigger versions can be exploited.
