Hey all.

I have recently been trying to back up Jade EMpire onto a DVD9 and have been having crappy luck. I came to the conclusion that my Thomson DVD drive in my 1.3 xbox does not like DVD9s. (Please don't reply regarding Jade Empire backups because that's not my main issue here. Don't want people telling me stuff I've already been through:)

I inquired about getting either a Samsung or Phillips DVD Rom and this tech guy in town told me that the Thomson was actually the best drive in the xboxs, but a lot of people talk badly about it because of a couple design flaws it has.

The word in the community here is that Thomson sucks for DVD+R media. This tech guy was saying that the reason it doesn't like DVD+R is not because of the media but because of the design flaws he mentioned. He also stated that he has been able to successfully "tweak" about 90% of these Thomson drives to get them to "like" DVD+R and therefore the DVD9s. He wouldn't tell me the technical aspect obviously because he'd be out of a job so I was wondering....do any of you tech people know anything about this?? If there is a way to tweak the DVD Rom I would like to try it. Thanks in advance.

Please don't reply with ignorant comments like "that's bullshit!" and then not explaining anything. I hate replies that don't provide any useful info and I'm sure others hate it too :)

rent a game that you know is a dvd9 and see if it plays...if it does.....then that theory is bunk.

I don't understand...what theory? I have rented a DVD9 game. Jade Empire is a DVD9 game. I wasn't talking about any theory here I was just asking if anyone knew what this tech guy was talking about, and to see if there was a way to tweak the Thomson drive to get it working with dual layer discs.

I was only talking about burned games here. Original store-bought games are different. The success rate of your console reading a store-bought game is about 99.9% because it's not burned, it's pressed. It's obvious that a copied game may give some problems.

I worked at Electronics Boutique for about 2 years and there were only 2 DVD9 games that wouldn't read on older systems.

That theory...and for the record, you didn't say what happened when you backed up the game. I don't even know what method you are using to back the game up....is it going to your hdd or to a dvd ( I imagine a DVD). The type of media exactly would help....the brand, dye type...etc. So far all we know is that you are having troubles backing up a game and you're blamming it on your DVD drive.

I would really like to help you,but I have nothing to work on here.

PS-I have an old 1.1 here with a thompson and running the 4976.2 bios and I haven't had any troubles yet. Lucky maybe....but still age really isn't too much of an issue.

DVD+R is only effective when it is converted to DVD-ROM (most quality burners automatically have this feature, and it's usually standard). I have a Thompson, and it reads DVD+R, but my burner also converts it to DVD-ROM, which is probably the reason why it works.

I agree with the techie that the Thomson is one of the better drives, but it has a few flaws.

I've heard other people say that their Thomson drives work with +R but the book type has to be changed to DVDRom which is what i did when i copied the game. Still didn't work. So far i havent heard of anyone having success on a Thomson drive with dual layer media.

The only problem I have with Thompson is that they go out a little prematurely..hehe, I said premature.

Anyway, My first Xbox had a Thompson, but I got like 2 years out of it before it wouldn't play any new demo discs, and eventually anythin new.

I have 2 Xboxes now, both with Samsung drives, and I would highly recommend them.

Know lots of people that had bad Thompson drives and a couple with bad Phillips, but I, personally, don't know anyone with a bad Samsung.
