I have a BENQ 1620 DVD-RW burner and am trying to use a formatted DVD-RW disk to store video files on temporaily. It's formatted with Instant CD-DVD which went OK. As soon as I try to either copy or move any file onto the DVD-RW I get the error message "cannot copy XXXX--this disk is write protected". Never had problems moving files to my CD-RW disks--why am I getting this message?? How the heck can a DVD-RW be write protected and how can I get rid of it??

I have Windows XP SP-1 and the disks are TDK 4.7 GB 4X DVD-RW.

if either of you mean you're NOT trying to write to the discs via XP's annoying and pointless drag/drop 'functionality', try turning off this checkbox as per this link - http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/creaky/untickcdrecordinginXP.jpg

Actually, i've been doing the opposite, the checkbox is normally unselected by default everytime i load up my external dvd writer. And, i actually have been purposefully checking that box because i was told by a member that it could help.

I've originally used Nero v6.6.0.16 Burning ROM whilst this box was checked, and everytime i tried to drop a avi file onto the drive of the external dvd writer it failed to recognise the drive ("incorrect function").

I've used the latest version of Nero Express, to burn an avi file as data ONTO CD, again whilst the checkbox has been selected, the file would not open up, it was there but would not open with any program.

And, everytime i do use XP, i now know that there are compatibility issues with XP and dropping files onto DVD, to drag and drop an avi file onto the external dvd writer drive it keeps saying that windows cannot copy the file, and gives me the options of retry, skip and cancel. And, same error message appears when i retry. XP is friggin' hopeless.

...hence why that 'functionality' in my opinion is crap and should be unticked. and you should slap the person who advised you to check that box :)

so much "slapping" going around lately... :) but i agree with creaky, this "option/functionality" is useless, it doesn't resolve the issue you are facing now and it only compounds things...

yeah, d/l'ed CopyToDVD yesterday, and tried it today, it worked brilliantly, this time i didnt check the box and it worked!!!

It took 2hrs, it burnt about 11 AVI files - 1 shy from a whole season.

So, i higly recommend using VSO CopyToDVD if your having similar problems dragging and dropping files to dvd.

thanks all for help!
