make sure you have the right .srt file and put it in the same folder with the AVI that you need it for. You'll also need to have the right codecs to make sure that whatever media player you're using can see the subtitle files also. Although there may usually be more than one .srt file for the movie title you want, you can usually compare the file sizes to make sure you're downloading the right one.

avi2dvd can convert avi's (and other formats) to either a DVD format or VCD format.

there is a guide on afterdawn guide section that shows how to convert AVI to dvd using this software (shows adding subtitle).

the only change you will have to make, in the output section, instead of chooseing dvd as required output, hit VCD.

I use DVD Lab Pro.
It separates the sound and movie to 2 separate files.
Then insert the appropriate SRT file (which is converted to a *.SP*).
Then convert the lot back to DVD format.
Unfortunately no easy way for problem/resolution.

Nothing to worry ! DVD Santa 4 does that too !!

just choose the VCD aspect Ratio ( 320X240 )! and in the advance button choose the cd format : 650mb or 700mb ! turn the movie into VCD ! that simple ! it can even burn in minidvd ,!
kestion why VCD? u lose some quality !!!

DVD Lab Pro gives perfect quality sub-titles.
Even need to press subs button on remote for them to show.
No loss of quality.

while we are here to teach people to make "legit" backups, there are those that chose to use our info for piracy purposes. the rules teeter on the line really, but none the less we will enforce them. I dont care if you talk about backing up whatever, but there will be no links to pirated material, or cracks of any kind, or discussions of cracking software. if what you do is on the wrong side of the law in your country, please choose your words wisely. since this site is based in Finland, where you are allowed to do this sort of thing, we personally dont care. but for christs sake there will be no aggression shown or you will be banned. if a member reminds you of our rules, just kindly thank him and move along.
