how do I burn mpeg movies to dvd-r discs so I can play them on my DVD player

I have downloaded some dvds in mpg format to my hard drive. I now want to burn them to DVD-R disks so I can play them on my home dvd player.
I believe I first need to format the files from mpg and then burn the foprmatted files to a disks but I do not know which software I need. Can anyone advise which is the best way to get these mpg files off my hard drive and onto the diskd in a format that will play these dvds on my DVD machine?

The first thing to find out is the format of the mpg files. You can use freeware AviCodec or GSpot to check the mpeg format, bitrate, and aspect ratio of the files. If they are already in usable DVD format you may be able to just create a data DVD with the mpg files on it to watch them.
If you want to add chapter points and/or menus then you'll have to do
some DVD authoring and maybe some format conversion. I find DVDAuthorGUI easy to use. There's an online guide for it here:

How to approach using multiple files on one DVD depends if they are all the same format and aspect ratio or not.

i have used avicodec on the two mpg files I have downloaded and the details shown are as follows
1) File : 798 MB (798 MB), duration: 1:50:08, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 33 %
Video : 709 MB, 901 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 352*288 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD), Supported
Audio : 88 MB, 112 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported
2) File : 706 MB (706 MB), duration: 1:21:28, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 39 %
Video : 631 MB, 1084 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 352*288 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD), Supported
Audio : 74 MB, 128 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported
Both files are shown with V. codec NAME MPEG (1) VCD
How do I know if these are files I can simply burn onto a DVD or whether I need to convcert them into another format. If I need to convert, what is the best software to do this and which are the best disks to buy?

you are better to convert them,
just load each one onto dvixtodvd,load the first one in,and then the second set after(on top),they will be merged together,
select the destination folder,
then click convert
this will produce a video ts folder,which you can then burn to dvd

ok i have used dvixtodvd and have the video ts folders. I then try and burn these to LOGIK DVD-R disks but get the error message telling me to use writable media. Does this mean I have the wrong disks - if so which are the best ones, or do I have the wrong DVD burning software - if so which is best

VCD = save your money on dvdr's! 2 losses of quailty? you just may make out the action? if you sit close to pc/tv...
