Hello All,

I just began making backups using only Shrink and Nero and even at 35% compression (slider at 65), I get an excellent picture on my 36" analog tv. I was wondering if anyone has played compressed backups using a dvd player with Progressive Scan on, and going into an HDTV?

My next tv will be HDTV and I'm wondering about the picture quality of my current backups.

Thanks,
Tony

I make backups using shrink and sonic record now. I play them back on my Apex 27" HD LCD Tv with Zenith dvd player with Progressive scan. To be honest at first it looked amazing to me. I saw no signs of losing any quality. But now that I am used to the resoulution that comes with a HDTV I seem to be noticing what I think is called "Artifacts". It sometimes looks a little staticky. I don't know if I'm bugging or what but I still would say don't let that stop you from getting a HDTV.

2 wrongs don't make it right, but it damn sure make us even!

Thanks for the info. I just began my backups and won't be concerned with moving up to PS and HDTV.

I have a Sharp Progressive scan DVD player/recorder connected to a 42" plasma tv. What I have noticed is that when I copied the entire original Star Wars almost all the stars were missing on the outer space shots. I recopied just the movie and that problem went away. It looks like with more compression you loose things. Other then that I have had no other problems.

I have a Mitsubishi 55" wide screen and I use Progressive scan. As long as I use deep analysis and one of the AEC settings I get good results as long as the compression is above 60%. 50-60% looks reasonable and below 50% the picture may start to look grainy and fuzzy. I usually get pretty good results if I copy the whole DVD minus the foreign languages, director comments and DTS if it's there. I like the DTS, but it takes too much space on the DVD. If it doesn't drop the compression below 60% I'll leave it in, but this seldom happens. I'll usually set the extras and menus at 50% compression which will usually give a little better ratio on the main movie.

Thanks guys.

I do pretty much the same thing as you Dave. I try to keep the movie compression above 70% and get excellent results. DTS is nice but the file size is more than twice that of regular 5.1 so why bother if it affects the movie quality. With the Menu I take compression to 50% and sometimes with the Extras I'll do Still Pictures if I have to in order to get the picture quality up, otherwise 50% compression.

Shrink and Nero make backing up a piece of cake!
