I have a dell Dimension 4550 with
pentium 4
2.4GHz
256 MB
30GB hard drive

I am using DVD shrink and nero.
I have a memorex burner with 16x DVD-ROM and 16x DVD+/-R write speed, and use 8x DVD-/+R media.
It normally took me 1:15 to analyze/decode than another hour to burn.
I thought this was too slow. I checked around and saw something about checking to make sure my controllers were set to DMA. They were not so I uninstalled and restarted and now the channel for my DVD recorder is set to POI and I cant get it out of POI. Now my encoding/analyzing starts at around 1500 kb/s and decreases to below 900 and that is when I cancel the operation.
I would really like to know what kind of encoding and burning times I should be expecting.
Thanks

Probably your dvd drive is connected to the secondary ide channel, my recomendation:
uninstall it, reboot your computer, it's highly probable that your computer will catch the parameters of your dvd drive (dma).

Even though i can burn faster, i only burn onto disks at 4X. I have a very high success rate burning and i attribute it mainly to this.

I use a mix of crappy media (Teon that i bought at a Christmas sale from Staples) and some really great media (T.Y.)

I have had zero bad burns with T.Y and the few bad burns that I had with Teons, but those few burns were due to an error on the original disk.

Bottom line, slow burn speeds are crucial to minimizing burn errors.

By the way, use the suggested settings so you don't burn all the way to the edge of the disk.
