an error occurred during a seek operation?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to install a back-up of a game and during the installation it gives me the error "an error occurred during a seek operation." Installation fails at this point.

The game is Jedi Academy. I've also got the original CD-ROM for Jedi Outcast and it gives me the same exact error if I try to install it. I've tried to use a daemon and mount it but it still does the same error.

I've had both of these games installed on this machine before long ago but it's been reformatted since. Any ideas? I can't find ANY good information about what causes that 'seek operation' error or how to fix it.
