I am new to the dvd burning game. I use dvd shrink to compress my files. I save them in iso format and then try and burn them using dvd clone. Its a new computer with a DVD+ and DVD- burner but the dvdrom is a DVD- drive. I bought 50 sony dvd+R discs. THe process works fine until I go to play them. One movie plays perfectly fine for 5:29 and then freezes and another movie plays for 11:29 and freezes. Please tell me I didn't just but 50 coasters. Any suggestions? Also I don't have Nero

Hi there,

One thing you should know about DVD Video is:

1- Buy the best media quality. Cheap media will cause problems.

2- Burn at the lowest speed possible.

If you use one of those 1click DVD Copier, they burn at MAX Speed.
Just that might be the cause of your freezing/skipping.

I never used CloneDVD, does it let you choose the burning speed?

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
is a great site to view media codes and see what others say about them.

I burn all my stuff at 2x and I have 0 problems...

I'm not familiar with Sony media if they are good or not.
But burned at 2.4x should help.

try DVD Decrypter along with DVD Shrink they are both free look under the software page
or i use clonedvd2 with any dvd from elby ($59)
personaly i find clonedvd2 to be the easiest
look thru the guides section for easy to use manuals for DVD Decrypter and shrink

Hi again,

Most common problems near the end of the movie, is burning to close to the edge of the media.

This is why DVDShrink is very populor, since it's free, and let's you select custom size.

Defaut is 4464 Mb for the ISO.
Lots of us choose 4300 to we don't burn so close to the edge.

Yesa but some each movie messes up in a different spot. One movie messes up 11 min in, and another only 5 min in to the movie. Others mess up way at the end. I use DVD Shrink to make them into ISO files. I have used dvdcone to try and copy(got rid of that), and have also tried dvd decypter. I have tried burning at all speeds. One movie I burned at 8, 4, and 2. I usually use 2X but the movies always mess up in the same spot of the movie no matter what the speed. Each movie messes up in a different spot. I've tried saving to the harddrive then burning and also direct burning. Nothing seems to work and my coaster collection is fastly on the rise.

Take in consideration your dvd player console (the one on the tv-set), brand, model, old models have problems playing dvd copies, others don't play it at all.

I had this problem once and realised it was the dvd player (connected to tv) that caused skipping. It was only 2 years old and a very good name - Pioneer which cost £140 at the time!

Do you have probs with playing normal dvd (from shops) or skips in frames, pixelation or the whole frame freezing? Some DVD players aren't compatible with some DVD media and if the DVD player isn't very good at giving you a smooth playback, just get a new player.

However, if that didn't work, then another solution would be to suggest upgrading to at least a 2Ghz AMD or Pentium processor with 512Mb of RAM. Most video apps are quite demanding by nature.

Don't save media files on the same partition/drive as the system; ideally have a seperate partition/drive for this purpose because the system copes much better when it accesses files from seperate locations rather than keep trying to read and write on the same partition/drive. This just slows the whole process therefor increasing the probabilty of getting playback errors.

You've chosen a good brand name in Sony but if you need another brand name to try out - I would recommend TDK media. You can get 8x DVD-/+R and 52x CD-R. On DVD Shrink, I can burn a DVD-R 4x at 8x without any playback issues.

Like i always say, it's always something simple to blame :)

The problem persists in all drives I try and play it it. I try and play it in numerous dvd consules, but it also skips in the dvd drive and the dvdrw drive as well so it has to be the disc. I just bought the computer 2 months ago so everything should be up to date. Here is a rundown of my system:
Sony VGC-RA820G Pentium 4 Processor 540 with Hyper-Threading Technology it runs at 3.2 GHz 1MBL2 Cache 800MHz FSB 1 GB PC-3200 with 400 MHz DDR and a 200GB hard drive
The burner is a DVD+R DOuble Layer/DVD+/-RW DVDRom

Your system specs are great and I now think that it might be a good idea to try some different brands of media.

Just get a couple of DVD-RW (i.e. one disc TDk and the other Verbatim would be a good choice) because you need to try out the media and if it still has playback issues with both discs, just format the disc and try something different. I would suspect the actual software and get DVD Decrypter to do the final burn instead. Use DVD Shrink to get DVD9 movies down to DVD5 size and select the "write ISO and burn with DVD Decrytper".

If you fail and are near your wits end, I would be, then buy the excellent Nero 6 Reloaded and it just might be your saviour.

You should still check out the burner firmware, I bought a new Plextor yesterday, and the firmware was three versions behind.

Alright I got it figured out. I tweeked with it all week but i got it to work now. I had a couple of programs that were running in the background that i believe were pulling the system down. Also if i don't burn directly with the program but rather save the iso file on the hard drive and then burn it works. I also got the newest version of DVD Decrypter. I also chagned some settings so I don't know if it was one or a combination of these things but it works now. Thanks again everyone
