Hello all -
This is my first post here, though I've been lurking for well over a week. I recently purchased a DVD burner and learned a lot about backing up movie DVDs just by reading old threads. Two nights ago I was able to successfully back up my first DVD, thanks to the wonderful Guide written by ScubaPete.

Anyhow, I hadn't done anything since then, but I just sat down tonight to try my hand at a more difficult one (one that will likely need compressing) and for some reason my old DVD writer appears to not be working. As it was working fine the other evening and I haven't used it since burning my other DVD, I feel it may somehow be related to that, but I'm not sure how When I try to play a DVD on that drive, it is VERY slow and choppy. In fact, the drive will not play an audio CD now either. Needless to say I cannot rip a DVD either with DVD encryptor. This isn't an overly serious problem, as the burner still works beautifully, but it seems strange that all of a sudden the reader is crapping out on me, as I've never had a problem with it before.

Thus if anyone here with more expertise can think of a reason for this, I would very much appreciate it. Just FYI, Sys Manager reports the drive is working fine. Drivers are updated. Running Windows XP Professional. Reader will allow me to explore DVD/CD with no troubles - only playback is adversely affected (and again, it WILL play - it just freezes for spans of minutes after every 2-3 seconds of playback).

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Is the movie you're trying to play a new (pressed ) dvd or a backup of a movie? What movie is it and does it play ok on your stand-alone player?

The movie I'm trying to play is an original DVD (Fifth Element). But I've tried several others and I'm having the same problem with all of them. Also the drive now will not play audio CDs properly either. The same media will play fine on the burner and on a stand-alone player. Strange, especially because the drive was working fine two days ago.
