I have been using DVDSHRINK and then burning with Nero Express with no problems until i started to get some errors. I have tries many things from reinstalling both programs to taking out my burner and putting it back in. I get this log error... forgive the length I am not sure what any of it means or what to do.

1. Running Programs
Make sure you quit all running background programs, such as anti-virus software.
Windows 95 Users
Use the Ctrl-Alt-Del function to quit all the programs using the Task Manager, EXCEPT for the Explorer, systray, and your recording software
Windows 98/ME Users
Select [Start] -> [Run], then input "msconfig". Disable everything under the [Startup] tab, except "system tray'.
Windows 2000/XP Users
Open the Task Manager, then select the program/s under the [Application] tab, then click [End Task].
2. Drive Connection
Other devices may be interfering with the CD-R/RW drive. Disconnect all other removable devices, then try recording again. If there is still a problem, try the following.
Optimal Hardware Configuration
All hard drives are placed on the Primary IDE, check that the drives are correctly set as master/slave. CD-ROM/CD-R/RW drives are placed on the Secondary IDE, set the recording drive as the "master". If you are using a USB or IEEE devices, disconnect them.
Update your chipset
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click to open [Hard Disk Controllers]. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, the Secondary IDE Channel controller and a brand name controller, e.g. Intel, SIS, VIA, etc. The brand name controller is what needs to be updated. Please visit their website to obtain these updates.

Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. Configure Windows
Make sure that your operating system has been fully updated. Visit the Microsoft website to acquire these updates.
3. ASPI Manager
Check your ASPI layer configuration. Your recording program is likely to use the standard windows ASPI layer, which has been replaced by another ASPI layer of yet another recording program. Make sure you have the original windows ASPI layer in use and retry. If the problem persists, contact the drive maker.
4. DMA Settings
Setting DMA mode:
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click on [CD-ROM]. This will expand to show the CD drives on your system. Right click on a drive and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on the [Settings] tab and check that the [DMA] option is enabled. Repeat this procedure for the remaining CD drives.
Win NT/2000/XP Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click [Device Manager] on the [Hardware] tab, then click to open the [IDE ATA/ATAPI (hard disk) controllers] section. You will find: the Primary IDE Channel controller, Secondary IDE Channel controller. Complete the following procedure:
Right click on the Primary IDE controller and select [Properties] from the menu.
Select the [Advanced Settings] tab. Check that the [Transfer Mode] for both devices is set to [DMA if available].
Repeat this for Secondary IDE controller.
Note: In some cases older CD-ROM drives will not support DMA mode. In that case please set both devices to PIO mode.
5. Disc
Recording errors often occur when the disc is dirty, or has fingerprints or scratches. If an error occurred during test simulation (before actual recording), clean the disc. If you are getting recording errors, try the following.
Use a different blank, recordable disc.
Use a different manufacturer's disc.
Ensure the disc is clean before recording:
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge of the disc.
Dry the disc completely.
Error during file verification
If an error occurred when the files were being verified, record the same files again using a different disc.
Read error when copying a disc
When copying a disc, if an error occurred while reading data from the original disc, the original disc may be scratched or dirty.
Try cleaning the disc.
Remove all fingerprints, dirt, and dust from the shiny side of your disc using a nonabrasive cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap solution.
Wipe the disc from the center to the edge of the disc.
Dry the disc completely.
Try using a different source drive.
To change the drive you use to read your disc, click the Change button when asked to insert a source disc into your drive tray.
Select the drive you wish to use from the drop-down menu.
Insert your disc into the new drive.
Try using copying the disc using one drive as both the source and destination drive.
When you use your recorder to both read and write to your disc, B's Recorder GOLD creates an image file of the entire disc to your hard drive and then copies that temporary file onto your blank disc. This can be helpful if the drive you are using to read your original disc is slow or unreliable.
If the problem persists, contact the drive maker.
6. Drive
If you have tried Actions 1 through 5 above, there may be a problem with your drive. Contact the drive maker with details of the error code. If the 5th and 6th digit of the error code is 80 through FF, then the error code is maker unique. The descriptions of these error codes differ depending on the maker.

well i think i have made about 10 coasters in the past week trying to get this to go. So far i have done most of what rotary suggested, thanks rotary,
but now it seams i have messed something up and i cannot select advanced tab in the ide channel of the device manager to change the dma.
im frustrated because it worked for a few weeks and i made over 30 movies then it just started to get errors when the disk was almost finished.

crappers, i made another shiny frisbee.
well i saved another log but i dont know what to do now.
i checked all the ide connections and made sure the master and slave settings were right, one thing that confuses me is which one goes into which one? does it matter which plug goes into which drive? i have both my harddrives on IDE1 and just the dvd drive on IDE2. i also removed my other cdrw completly.
one thing i did forget to mention is that i dont have service pack 2 installed. could this be the problem? even though it worked for so long. a few of my favorite programs wont work in service pack 2.
i dont think it is a problem with DVDSHRINK because i have done it the same way several times and have tried burn a few different ones in the past couple days. with no luck of course. :(

hi
your dvdrw drive is on DMA now but your maxtor needs sorting! same process uninstall in device manager! then reboot pc and check it
1, What type of discs are you useing? use dvdidentifier to find out the internalk codes?
2, did you rip the dvd yourself? what apps etc? do you use dvd shrink / dvd decrypter? if so burn with decrypter to see if its just nero with error?
3, update to latest nero and try that?
although you need to sort dma, it may be cheap discs!

I just used up my last dvd and gonna buy some more tomorrow.
I took a DVD and did the Shrink/DVD Decrypter thing and got an error with fail to write sector or something like that. It must then be cheap disks. Although it it worked before and I bought the exact same brand.
If i just wipe my comp and reload windows this problem should be solved right? Providing i get some Verbatim disks or something of taht quality? Not Memorex stuff?

ok ill try that, the problem is that where i live those verbatim are rather pricey, i am not familiar with ritek GO5, is that a brand name like Memorex or Verbatim?
i would hate to turn a couple of those into coasters

Here's a guide that was posted by "Scuba" in the DVD Shrink forum, it shows how to "ENABLE DMA" back to normal. Looks like yours is in PIO. Hope this help you a little, if not a lot. And YES..... please "STAY AWAY" from MEMOREX and other CHEAP MEDIA. I would recomment "FUJI, MAXELL, TY, VERBATIM, SONY and TDK" and make sure it says; "MADE IN JAPAN" or "SINGAPORE"
To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager
1. Go to "My Computer, ""System Tools," "View System Information," then System Properties, "Hardware," Then Open Device Manager
2. Double-click IDE ATA//ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which your burner is connected and select Properties. Now click the Advanced Settings tab.
4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if available if the current setting says, "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already says, "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must "toggle" the settings. That is, change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click "OK".
Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to "DMA if available".
OPTION: Right-click the burner and select "Uninstall" and then "OK" all prompts until the PC reboots. Upon rebooting, the PC should "find" your burner and reinstall it setting it by "Default" to DMA.

thanks for the reply but unfortunatly i have a couple problems.
In the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers list i dont see my dvd drive and when i check the properties of Primary IDE 1 or 2 i dont have an advanced tab. just General,Driver, Resources.
I read about updating the chipset and frankly i dont know how to do it and i dont want to mess up my comp any more than i have.

try just deleting the primary and secondary channels, reboot , then windows will redetect/reinstall them. then just check they're set to DMA...

thanks for that, i tried removing both and still no luck, still no advanced tab.
I must have a serious software problem or could it be the way i have the master slave?
My samsung is set to master - has windows on it
my maxtor is set to slave - has whatever on it
does it matter whether i have the master on the middle ide plug or the end?
I think i better reload windows or maybe ill just get my money back for the dvd burner as it is less that 30 days old.

Slowly follow this guide and you will be able to change your DMA back to ON or DMA IF AVAILABLE. Just a note for you to keep in mind: it's "not" a "advanced tab", it's a "ADVANCED SETTINGS" - you will be able to find this easily inside either your "PRIMARY or SECONDARY" IDE Channel Properties. Both of the Primary and Secondary is under the"IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers." Just LEFT click on the [+] sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and you should see them now. It's not that hard, again here's the guide:

in a later post it shows that it is on but maybe they way i have the jumper settings it is not allowing me to show the Advance settings tab

sorry to threadjack....but
regarding resetting DMA
i'm using windows 98, and i can't find IDE ATA/ATAPI in device manager to change dma
my encoding is taking forever, from old thread searches, it looks like i need to reset dma, just need to find out how for sure in win98
i did find this in a thread, which is what i'm gonna try tonight, should this work?
Setting DMA mode:
Windows 95/98/ME Users
Right click on [My Computer] and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on [Device Manager], then click on [CD-ROM]. This will expand to show the CD drives on your system. Right click on a drive and select [Properties] from the menu. Click on the [Settings] tab and check that the [DMA] option is enabled. Repeat this procedure for the remaining CD drives.

Uninstall the 2 channels and the intel drivers ( intel for subotai ) for jer2911tx is yours intel or via4in1? but anyway for both of you uninstall them and reboot your pcs! then use "nero info tool" to check your dma status!

i think that applies to my laptop, which is winxp.
i did get Nero with my liteon burner, i just haven't messed with it since shrink and decrypter were doing the job.
i guess i should ytry to use Nero to check the status of dma via the info tool.
if i can load Nero on win98, i'll check the desktop, too
i can't go to device manager IDE ATA/ATAPI for the desktop using win98, i have to go to the cd rom list in device manager and check each drive individually, i think. they say dma is enabled, but it is taking an hour or more to encode....way longer than it used to.
i tried reading from dvdrom on desktop and writing to dvd burner to see if that would speed up the process using two drives, still takes forever to encode.
i updated the firmware for both drives, not sure what to check next if dma is enabled already. i'll try to get Nero info tool working
