Recheck the cables inside your tower.Maybe one of them popped out or maybe loose.

Go into device manager, uninstall that drive and reboot. If you have windows xp,then it should automatically install it.

Did it work ok,and then crap out or you just haven't gotten it to work proper when you installed it?

You may also want to check out the manufacturers web site for the latest firmware update for your dvd-rom.It may just need a simple update.Beware of hacked firmware.

Any other info you have will help solve this issue.

you didn't just recently try to flash the firmware?

To get to device manager right-click My Computer, go to Properties, select Hardware and you should see Device Manager. Find your drive, right-click it and select uninstall. Then reboot your computer and it should find your drive automatically.

If that doesn't work, go into BIOS (hit F2 or Delete when you boot the computer before Windows loads up, usually it's Delete) and see if your computer recognizes it.

Well. Heres an update:

I put the system restore disk in the computer then rebooted it. It read the disc because it asked me if i wanted to reinstall windows. Of course, I excited out of it.

But this is telling me that it works only when i put that disc in. How come nothing else works?

Do you have any packet writing software installed? Such as InCD (comes with Nero), Drag to Disc (comes with Roxio) or DLA (comes with Sonic RecordNow)? If so, uninstall these, you'll most likely never use them.

The drive obviously works, but something (most likely software related) is locking it.
