I was wondering if anyone burning their own copy on how long thus it takes to burn them using shrink. When I 1st burn a copy of my personal dvd I cant remember how long it takes cuz its been a while, I think it took me 1hr or more. And when I burn vanhelsing it took me almost 2 1/2 hr just to copy it, And realized that its the DMA. I fixed that already by deleting the secondary.my question is is it normal when it takes an 1hr 1/2 to copy it??

with those specs an hour and a half to encode a movie with Shrink is normal. Are you using the quality enhancements? If you do you will get a better backup but it will take a lot longer.

If you feel like spending some money you can try CloneDVD2 from Slysoft or Elby. It works way faster than Shrink with the same quality results in my opinion, and gives you more options. You can get a 21-day free trial here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/clonedvd.cfm

You will need a decrypter though, if you choose this route. AnyDVD is awesome and runs in the background so it's not an extra step in the process. You can get a 21-day free trial of that also here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/anydvd.cfm or you can also use DVD Decrypter which is freeware, but will add a little extra time to your process and take up some extra hard drive space.

If you choose to go with CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD you can buy them both as a combo for a discounted price, as they are both made by the same company. Guides available here: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/full_dvd_to_dvdr_with_clonedvd.cfm

Are you backing up the entire disc or main-movie only?

The larger the movie, the longer it takes to encode to your hard drive. I agree with squizzle and your time sounds about right. Then you have the extra enhancements like max smoothness and max sharpness. If you had these ticked then you would take a heck of a lot longer.

In my backup 598 mhz celeron with 256 mbs ram. I can rip and burn an average main movie only backup in 45-60 mins. But I tried entire dvd of meet the fockers using max smoothness, and it took 9 1/2 hrs just to encode it. Last time I try that again, LOL

The more compression, the longer it takes. That's why I mainly do main movie only and only AC3 5.1 english only. I even get rid of most of the ending credits.

A few things that can also help speed you up, Defrag your hard drive and turn off everything possible that may turn on while you do any of the dvd backup process.

thanks for the reply guys...

saugmon:I'm not sure which one I have to pick so I backup the main movie. but not the extra ones. but when I starting to encode it shows that I even included the extra like director comentary. I just dont know which one to pick thats why it takes a long time to burn.

When I open disc using DVD Shrink, I just leave the AC3 5.1 english ticked only. The other streams I leave unticked, including directors commentary crap.

In re-author, use the icon with the arrows, one pointing right and other pointing left to further cut out that extra crap on beginning and ending credits. This is where you set your start frame and end frame. You can get rid of about 3-5 mins of video and further reduce that compression, making the encoding process a little quicker.

If you want to know for sure what audio stream to select, try listening to them.

With the main movie highlighted, start the preview window. Run the slider ahead a bit so there is some dialog occurring.

Right click anywhere in the preview window.

Select audio from the list.

Now you can pick each stream and listen to it. When you find the one you want, just make sure that it's box is ticked on the right. Untick the rest.

i think the laptop is back to normal, about 15-20 minutes or so for encoding, but it is writing faster than before (still only writing about 2.5x, but faster than before). i wrote the drive description down at home, forgot it...
i went through and checked some dvds this weekend....
looks like every dvd copied with the desktop, using the new burner, is crap.
it freezes up and is choppy.
i was reading from the dvd rom and copying to burner, so i was hoping it was the dvd rom that was causing the problem with the dvds coming out bad, so i just used the burner for decrypting, then used shrink, same problems on same disc i tried to backup.
i already updated the drivers for the liteon 1673, i guess i'll try to have newegg replace it and try again. it does say it is supposed to work on win 98, so maybe i got a bad burner, and maybe that is why the encoding is taking forever.....
pain in the butt
not sure how to troubleshoot the burner to see if it is screwed up, but i can't get a good backup from it.

jer2911tx,
This sounds more like a media problem than a burner problem. What are you using? You always want to use good media like Ritek, Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

i am using tdk 8x
working fine on the laptop, which is probably a crappier burner

nothing i have burned on the desktop's new lite-on has come out good.
everything is choppy and freezes up.

i think i've tried at least half a dozen different titles on the desktop, none are coming out good.
the tdk dvds have all come out fine in the laptop burner.

if i need to return the burner or swap it, i need to hurry before it's too late, otherwise i'll just have to find someone like fry's who has the 1673 then return the one that isn't working.
i am going to try to upgrade to win 2000 and see if that makes a difference, but the liteon 1673 says it works on win 98
i'm not sure what else to try, but the laptop is set up the same way, just using decrypter and shrink, but the laptop is on win xp

i downloaded the latest firmware for the lite on, went from a j02 to a j07, i think
it says it is compatable with win 98, but i'm gonna try to upgrade to win2k tomorrow and try it out again, should have some verbatim discs in the mail by then.

the tdk 8x works fine in the laptop, no problems at all.
i hope it is just the media, but no idea why the tdk work fine in the laptop.

i was using the trial AnyDVD while making some, and tried more after the trial of AnyDVD was over, neither way worked for backups.
