I am not sure if this is the right forum or not for this, but What do I need to copy movies? I got a new Dell with a DVD burner built in and I have tryed burning with DVD-r and DVD+RW but with the program record now they come up as not a disk in the computer. So what do I have to do to get started thanks.

If you want to copy regular dvd movies, then all you need is DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.

Dvd shrink rips and compresses those larger DVD-9 movies to fit standard dvd+/-discs.This is free! It does have trouble pulling off the encryptions of the newer sony arcos encryption.

Dvd decrypter is a more powerful ripper and has a burn engine. This is also free! It comes in handy to rip the newer encryptions that DVD Shrink won't rip.

I don't know anything about record now,it may be like Nero and is not allowed to pull off encryptions, both decrypter and shrink will. Also another program called AnyDVD will rip those encryptions. It runs in the background so you don't notice it is on.

Here's some great guides you can follow: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

Use some rw's to practice with, then get some good quality media and keep that burn speed at 4x max to start with.

What model of burner do you have in your dell? I've read many posts on members having trouble with the phillips models and dell replacing them with nec's.
Good Luck

See in Suagmons post where dvd shrink and decrypter are high lighted? Click on those download them use that guide and holy shizit you have backed up ur movies. Follow them to a tee, and you should have no prob, and heed the warning about the good blank media. 75% of all probs are related to that. Try tdk or Verbatium, Taiyo Yuden is king around here although I have never been able to buy any since I live in a small berg. Tdk is what I use no problems as of yet. Also 4x is fast enough like he said I have a 16x speed, still burn at 4x, quality is worth the wait. Cheers, let us know how it goes...---zen-->

I have no idea at all what that is supposed to mean . . . . if you haven't something to contribute, don't post . . Thanks.

gheadboy,

Certain players are a bit picky about what they play and what they don't.

Players over 2 years old may not play much of anything BUT a Cyber-Home $39.99 player will play a cheese pizza as well as your burned DVD's.

Cheers,

Pete

I've got an apex 1110w. It plays everything off both my benq's,+r only on my cyberhome dvd recorder,-r only off my I/O Magic 16x- built by EMPA,and absolutely would not play the plus format off my original khypermedia +8x burner. That second benq 1620 took care of that issue. I did have to re-rip a few of them khypermedia and dash I/O backups from my litey and burned with the benq's. That litey wouldn't recognize The plus backups off the I/O magic, even booktyped to dvd-rom. The sony dvp-ns325 I have plays everything from all 5 of these burners, including crappy cmags.I do play my backups on a lot of different stand alones,ps2's,and pc drives so compatability for me is critical.

This leads to different burners being weaker and stronger and the same for stand alone players. Since your buddy's backups play fine on your apex, but it won't play your dash backups, it could be a simple media or format change. Try the plus format, depending what actual burner dell put in your pc.If it is capable of dual format, then you can pick up a 3 or 5 pack of maxell +4x or +8x,then try one of those backups in all your stand alones to see if there is any difference.

Have you found the exact manufacturer and model # of that burner?

What is the exact brand name and speed rate of your dvd-r's?

Your burner may have the bitsetting capability of booktyping dvd +r/+rw to dvd-rom. This should make them more compatable on stand alones, except for that pc of crap I/O i have,LOL.

If you go into device manager, open up the tree for dvd/cd-rom drives and it should tell you your model. Some burners may give you a generic name.

Dvd shrink will also tell you on the backup options,if you burn e

@gheadboy

Open DVD Decrypter, select iso mode read and insert your blank media on the window on the rt hand side it will tell you your media code.

If just a begginer the most important things to remember is keep your software to the latest version, have your firmware on your drive updated periodically and USE GOOD MEDIA. I prefer Taiyo Yuden TYG02's, can be bought at Netwegg or supermediastore for about $.40 disc.

Raven2005,

Heh, Heh, you have got to shop around . . . .

I just recieved my order of Tiayo Yuden (100/spindle) and it cost me $.27ea, $27.00 for the lot. It was the best deal yet for TY's on MeritLine.com. Also got Verbatim, DataLife with a $20.00 refund from a pack of 50. It was all at the beginning of the month - Ya gotta love those media sales :P)

Wow, I'd no idea. Just tonight I saw an Ad in aD, TY's with a discount for 4X at $24.00 / 100 pack. You have got to make friends over in the "States" even with the shipping you'd save a ton . . . .
