i.e rented and loaned games. then why all the trouble to flatten GOW to dvd-5 if ya already own it? i just bought it instead just now for $30. but i won't go through all that just to have a backup.

Very good point. But here is why.
Say you own a game , and it gets scratched up before your done playing it all the way through. Then you have to go buy another copy to finish it. But not if you were smart enought to make a back up copy.
Or say you have kids that use the discs like frisbee's
you anren't a millionaire and don't want to keep replacing them.
Then you back them up and put the originals in a safe place. That way you will never have to replace your game or movie, just keep backing up the original.
Make sense?

You know, I wonder how many people actually do that. I'm sure a lot of people will be willing to say they will, but I think that a lot of people just back up games so they don't have to buy them.
If you ask me, it's like a double-edged blade. On one side, it'll take care of scratching, protection, slow loading, etc. But on the other, it can hurt companies by making pirating available to more people.

When I see people listing 100+ ps2 games they've successfully "backed up," I have my doubts about them owning all those games.
And I don't really believe anyone would spend weeks figuring out how to compress/split a complicated game (GT4, GoW) just on the off-chance their owned copy gets damaged. Although I imagine it IS satisfying to finally "crack" one of these tough games.
Wait, who the hell am I to sound critical of this stuff? I love it, I love all of you, and I love Afterdawn.com!

i like to rent games, then back them up incase they get scratched before i beat them. Then if someone else destroys it later, the store can call me and ill give them my backup!

Heh, the GT4 is a completely different thing. Everyone who's actually WORKING on cracking the game actually owns a copy. Seriously, not a single person who's working on it, is working on it from an image of a game they don't own.
It's just...... everyone stopped. They all stopped at the tables. Since no one's been able to decrypt it, everyone's just STOPPED working on it.
GT4 is one of those games that people crack out of pure curiosity, same thing with all unusually formatted games. It's fun for some people to do stuff like that.

No one's been able to break the encryption on the TOC. Why? Because they haven't.
Encryption is a very difficult thing to deal with. Let me give you an example. Open a Sunday newspaper, and look for a section with the cryptograms. Try solving those, it's not hard, but it's time consuming if you're doing it by hand, isn't it?
Usually the cryptograms in the newspapers are at worst monoalphabetic crypts. The kind of stuff the guys on GT4 are dealing with is an encryption algorithm we don't know anything about.
In other words, when some deciphering genius can figure out the encryption algorithm, there'll be a GT4 ripkit within hours.
I don't think there's ever been a Sony game that was protected at the software level, and not just the usual hardware specs that keep users from copying games, but this time there was a serious, conscious effort to keep people from copying the game. They have been keeping track of what we've been doing, and they've learned. If you use the old VOL extracting tools, they all extract false tables on GT4. Basically, Sony actually IMPLEMENTED a software protection on this game. This is the reason we haven't cracked it yet.
Ever since the DVD9 patcher came out, interest in a DVD5 rip has plummeted. If you check the Alucard forums (the last place ANYONE was working on this) the last time anyone took a look at this problem was on May 3rd.
Anyways, most people (incorrectly) assume that all future games on PS2 will be DVD9, and that if the toxic patcher can patch GT4 and other DVD9 games to work, that it's the FINAL solution.
However... they're all wrong. Just watch, game developers will stumble upon this forum, and others, realize just how well encrypting the tables worked, and implement a similar method for their games. Anyways, I expect a lot of the bigger titles to start doing this, and that'll be hell for the rest of us.
If EVERYONE starts doing an inhouse encryption for their games, it will mean the end of piracy and backing up as we know it. The only way to truly protect your games is to develop a similar system as the one that GT4 uses. This really isn't too hard, seeing as there are TONS of encryption algorithms that are freely available. A simple 128-bit key (of any kind) that's printed on the unreadable section of the disc will effectively END all piracy on the PS2.
Well, until "Pirates" start shaping up. Today's pirates are nothing more than a bunch of losers using DVD Decrypter/Alcohol to rip PS2 games that they get from an insider (like a guy running a distribution center, or from a truck) and decide to put it up on eDonkey/IRC. They all say that it's "Scene" only, but if you're in the scene, you're expected to share it on major networks.
Today's pirates are the spoiled-brat children of yesterday's pirates. They're lazy, ineffective, and under-powered.
Just two years ago, pirates ran entire underground networks, they set up online distributors, and they gained notoriety by having the most quantity, as well as FULLY-WORKING, FULLY-CRACKED quality warez.
Nowadays, you're a fucking pirate if you can use DVD Decrypter, and put it in your shared folder. The only thing you need is some tag, like [XTreeeMe WareZ LoL] and you're part of an 'uber-leet' group of k-rad krackers.
Anyways, enjoy the run guys, the golden age of cracking tool-supplied, spoon-fed leechers is just about over.

RemyK313-
you went off an a tangent for no apparent reason....easy killer.
fact of the matter is piracy isnt "going anywhere" fact is, a real piracy junkie, the ones dedicating themselves to free code, mind there own business, stay in there cliques, break code...but they have to announce it how they did it, and get credit, and since piracy has boomed, 400,000 little kids will run around saying how they have a tool cuz they are pirates...big deal...get used to it....anyways...on to the real issue..
MAKING COPIES OF BACKUPS U ALREADY OWN...
2 things...
1) i love fight night rd 2...but just tonight, im boxing, and all of a sudden im in a match from hell, where it kicks the crap outta me, i cant do nothing..so i get madder and madder each round, until after like the 6th knockdown i open my ps2, throw the game as hard as i can against my wall, and shatter it...and curse...now i certainly cant do that with 40 dollar games now can I? so i pop my original back in, copy it again..and there we go..another disc to throw later on...lol...
2) because "they" tried so hard to not let u copy it...its a matter of principle. they say u cant, u prove them wrong.
and 99 percent of the ppl here copy cuz they are leeches. they dl there cd's, torrent their movies, pirate there games, and brag to all there buddies about how they saved so much damned money.
fact of the matter is, ive got 8 games, i only copy games i like, and frankly, i couldnt stand not supporting the makers of those games, cuz i desperatly need them to release sequels, or ill be stuck with only fps and sports games left to buy...UGh..(except boxing lol)
I remember when dinosaurs roamed the land
I remember when thinkin the earth is flat was cool...
but most of all...i remember when the Apple ruled the schools...GO NUMBER MUNCHERS!!!

The home-printing cost is so high that it's not worth it.
You obviously didn't get the joke.
You know who's got the best example of said joke? Jizmak. I love that guy.

I would but i don't have enough space on the web to store and link all the pics.
I don't know how people come up with such brilliant ideas.
And why would anyone have to prove anything to you in the first place?
I am sure we all know that people actually back up games they do not own, but since that is illegal people saying things like "i just rented and burned this game" or "i just downloaded this game" is just plain stupid.

ummm....no.
Use the hell out of the office printer whenever i can; dont like dropping 70 bucks on ink every two weeks. Then the stamper i used to put the covers on the movie dvds was slightly off and the swishing of the weight caused two dvd players to malfunction. Not putting my pstwos through that. I can live with with a sharpie.

O come on - How many people do you think are actually going to do that. Thanks for saying it was such a brilliant idea (Sarky), and as far as anyone having anything to prove to me - I coudn't give a shit. It was only a suggestion and a comment to tankpowers post. OK!
I backup my games because of my two under four years old boys. Full Stop. Already had to replace a ps2 because it was dropped by the oldest.
And being honest here - I actually downloaded God Of War because I could not wait for It to come out in the UK.End Of June (Sorry)

there are also printable dvds, and printers which can print on these dvds and cds, and my ink has never costed me 70 bucks for the whole pack of mine, thats including all 5ish catridges. so once again, its cheap for me to make professional looking cds and dvds
