Does encoding into MPEG-2 mean the same as converting into DVD format?

I'm still new to the game and have three questions:
1. Does encoding a file using an MPEG-2 encoder (like TMPGEnc) mean the same thing as converting a file to DVD format (using DVD Santa, DivXtoDVD, etc.)?
2. Do MPG files need to be converted? Or only the ones that are in MPEG-4 format?
3. I have noted the various software presented in the Guides (which are very helpful btw): TMPGEnc is for encoding, IFOEdit is for authoring. Does anyone know what function(s) these other software offer: DivXtoDVD, WinAVI, DVD Santa, Avi2DVD, Nero, Sonic DVDIt! SE?

I'll attempt to take this one on, in a simplified answer.
Encoding most commonly refers to the process of changing (encoding) AVI captures to MPEG-2 format. Lot's of people capture in AVI first then encode to mpeg-2. Another process is then necessary, authoring the mpeg-2 files into DVD format (creating vob/ifo/etc files) so the finished product can be burned to a dvd-/+r disk and played in set-top-box (STB aka dvd player).

hi
there are mpegs and mpegs, meaning like mpeg1 or mpeg2 some mpegs are not dvd compliant, different aspect ratios, computers can play most anything with theright software, but dvd players need vob/bup/ifo structure... some apps wont except mpeg2 unless dvd compliant.
could you tell us what you what to do? ie: go from avi to dvd? if this is what you want i use now FILM MACHINE its free and uses CCE (not free) a pro type encoders which gives excellant quilty from avi to dvd, it has a built in free encoder which is very good, it can convert to pal or ntsc, change audio bitrate, it does the lot for you, and will burn to disc aswell. yes a top dog app.

Thank you, that helps. Ugh, not another software! I am still trying to get feedback on the ones I listed. :-) I will add it to the list of software to try...
Here is the info for one MPG file:
File Format: MPEG-1 System Stream
Content: Video and Audio
Data Rate: 1316 kbps (ave)
Video Info: 352 x 240, 29.970 fps
Audio Info: 48000 Hz, 131.1 kbps, stereo
Audio Format: MPEG-1 Layer 2
How can I tell if an MPG file is DVD compliant?
PS: What I am trying to do is copy several small video files (AVI, MPG, WMV, ASF) onto a DVD.

hi
film machine (avi only) would or should be your first app! if you want the quailty to be the same after conversion and from avi to mpeg to dvd is 2 losses of quality... so yes you need a good encoder!
so the best apps need to be used
you can load multiple avi in one go to produce a dvd all avi jioned and will play as one afetr the other...
if you want a menu load the file to tmpgenc dvd author then burn it with same app...
use mainconcept to get your mpeg to dvd compaitible..excellant app
TMPGEnc = which one theres 3?
IFOEdit = good but buggy! i only use it for making ifo/bups to go with vobs for dvds...
DivXtoDVD = okish fast, quailty ok, falls on doing correct aspect ratios! sometimes (small film center of tv)
WinAVI = not used but a so soo app from what i know?
DVD Santa = bin it!
Avi2DVD = great BETA app but buggy doesnt produce end files for some reason! but not always so hit and miss
Nero = very good but which app? theres like 10?
Sonic DVDIt! SE, not used, not seen it talked about much?

Rotary, you said "Film Machine (avi only)" and when I read about software for encoding I often see them described as AVI to dvd. Does the term AVI include mpg, wmv, asf or does it refer explicitly to files with an .AVI extension? In other words, can Film Machine be used on mpg, wmv, and asf files?
