Why is it that products in america are so cheap compared to Europe but are never able to be shipped to there.

e.g. In Ireland - 60gb ipod photo ?450 or $570. In America or ?350 $450. This should be criminal. Usb 2.0 card $12?, in Ireland ?45. This is very annoying. IF they would ship here then i would have no problem. But those b*stards won't. It boils my blood

Hi,
Let's see here... at Futureshop they want $570 Canadian - yup that's about $450 USD :^)
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/subclass.asp?logon=&langid=EN&ca...
If you want something let me know, I'll quote you Priority Post from Canada.
Check these prices
http://www.pccanada.com/...
and then, to get Euro's multiply x .627
Can you not get stuff cheaper from some mail-order place in the UK or wherever?
Most of the product manufacturers have marketing agreements with rightsholders who have carved the world up into hemispheres and continents.
International sales of this type therefore, if not prohibited outright, are certainly frowned upon by 'gentlemen's agreement'...
Let me know how my local shop's prices look compared to yours,
Regards

something that has just come to my attention is that everything in the US is taxed by about 10% and this is not included in any price anywhere! Why would anyone do such a thing??? Therefore my $450 ipod is now $500 but even that is cheaper than the ones in good auld rip-off Ireland.
@ogs the uk is ALWAYS the same if not more expensive than @ home.

I am sorry that your prices are so much higher than USA, I believe it has something to do with supply and demand, we buy a whole lot more products so the price remains lower. As for shipping even here that can sometimes be high, the price to ship overseas may not offset the price you are paying in your country. As for taxes if I buy from online, I may or may not be charged taxes because my state only asks me to declare my purchases at the end of the year, and then pay the taxes, i.e. they do not know what I have bought.

after moaning to a more intelligent person than me, it has come to my attention that because the standard of living and wages are higher in ireland than pretty much everywhere else that is reasonable to pay "more" for goods. Still, i'm annoyed

It doesn't matter where you live, the consumer is the one that always pays in the end. Shipping here in the USA use to be by weight or size. Now most places charge by the amount the item costs. A $200. motherboard may cost more to ship in some cases than a piece of machinery that weighs 10 times more than the motherboard. I order stock for our stores and use to get free shipping from companies if the order total was over $50. Now most of them went to the dollar amount shipping so the more I order the more it costs to ship. They get you either way.

Most of our costs are down to duty and tax (VAT).

We are suppose to benefit because we get free health care and education - well nearly free education. As well as Social Security benefits which don't stop because you can't find a job or State Pension Schemes and free drugs, bus passes etc.

That should be income tax rather than sales tax.

Fly to the States on holiday and go on a spending spree - just don't tell customs!
