yes, it depends which version PS2 you have.
Anything above a V5 i would suggest some good -R discs like Philips 8X DVD-R or TDK 4X DVD-R
They both work great on my V7 and V12
But the philips work every time.

Ritek Go4 DVD-R 1X. Of course using DVD+R is entirely option which also will cause you to waste all those discs cause chances are they won't load.

I use the -R for every game i do, and they all work fine.
You can always set the other discs aside and use them when you want to back up movies, which you can burn on just about any old crap and they work. That's what i did when i was testing media to see which would work best for me. I tested +R and -R from a few manufacturers.
Memorex sux, Maxcell was a 50/50 chance, TDK 4X DVD-R worked real good
and Philips 8X DVD-R were a 100% success rate.
I just used the leftovers to back up movies on.

I use a cheap brand called ilo, dvd-r cost 15 for about 9 bucks, I was using Durbrand but they quit selling htem here. I tried several expensive brands b4 these and I would get a disc that wouldnt work every no and then, but with these ilo, I have went through about 60 with NO problems at all.I use the Dvd+r for my movies, they play good on my dvd player.

Movies will play fine but ps2 games are different,
they read more frequently and randomly from the media.

But to each his own. (I use +r too every time)

But dont take my word for it look here:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

The following list is in preference order.

MXLRG01, MXLRG02 = Maxell = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals = (-R)<-----------------VERBATIM MY CHOICE #1
TDKG02 = TDK Corp = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
TAIYOYUDEN or YUDEN = Taiyo Yuden = (-R)<--------------FUJIFILM (made in japan) MY CHOICE #2
