I have an hp 640i lightscribe burner and it should be able to record up to 16x with dvds but it is barely getting to 4x...when I speed test it with nero it fails half the time when it gets near to the end....I am using Maxell 8x media to burn..I finally got it to burn on 8x with a film but it took 18 minutes to burn from a file..and the finalizing itself took over 3 min..the used read buffer goes to 0 then takes forever to get back to 100 to coninue the process..any help would be appreciated...

If you did not save your last burn log file, you will have to do it again, and then save the log and post it, need to see your errors.

Sorry Swayzie I could not get back with you but I got bogged down with work. Try removing InCD as Flip suggested. I have this exact same drive and it is running with no problems, the only thing that is different is that I have it set up as slave instead of master. Am not sure what you are trying to burn, but if it is a movie try ripping with DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink and burning with DVD Decrypter instead of Nero to see if it is the drive or the Nero program. You could also try another brand of media, although I have had no problems with Maxell but I use -R disks.

Another thing you may want to consider; Note this on your log:

Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)

Set Target size down to about 4350MB for single layer disks; this will keep you away from the outer rim of disc to avoid write errors....

I only use -R because it is more compatible with all my standalones, I have one that will not play +R. Here is a Nero log file from my 640c, maybe you can compare it to yours.

As you can see I do have InCD on my system but it has never conflicted with my burning, however some people do have problems with it. If it is ripping and burning a movie you are trying to do try using another program to insure it is not the drive. You can also try another brand of media.

Target size is set in the encoding software: In Shrink, you will find it in File then Preferences then Preferences (again) and set target size to custom which should be between 4300-4360. In Nero, open up Nero Recode 2 and you will see block "fit to target", again use custom to resize to somewhere between 4300-4360.

The HP 640I series is a +/- burner, so it doesn't matter which format disks you use. Make sure you have the latest firmware for your HP burner. Maxell's are excellent disks in either the + or - format. However, in your Nero History post, I can't find where you media is listed except as "unknown". Try another quality brand media.

Remove InCD, lower target size and try again. If not successful, repost the Nero history again.
