I wanted to know if I have a problem with the burner or disks ?
I have usedmemorex, and tdk dvd-R and dvd+r at 2.4 speed amd 4x speed compatable disks.
I just bought some Sony dvd-r 1x-8x speed disks and when I put them in not knowing at the time the speed adjust in the roxio burning software doesn't show. when I eject the disk the speed numbers show back up. I guess Obviously I got the wrong disks. but mean while I thought it was the software. or the TDK burner, then I got an old burn I did with tkd disks and I had minus and pluses but they were 4x and 2x.. So I guess it wont burn the 8x I got ?
Is this right ?
Just wanting to know this little bit of info.
And where can I download the firmware for the tdk, the software that came with the TDK is Roxio 6.0 basic. can I use Nero 6.0 or some other burning software? and Is the burner only set up for up to 4x disks ?

Memorex - avoid like the plague. (CMC Mag media codes = very bad news).
I don't know much about TDK & Sony quality as i only use Verbatim myself these days, but after looking at the media codes here, most of them look ok - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 (the media codes are in brackets at the end of each line)
However there will be others who will reply and give you better recommendations for Sony, TDK, and other media too.
Sounds like you may need newer firmware for your burner. You haven't stated what model you have, but you can find firmware here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

i have a feeling it's your media that is giving you the problems, as creaky said, stay away from memorex...i don't know how many times i've suggested this to new members, but, i want them to know how awful they really are...CMC MAG media ID is quite arguably the WORST media talked about on AfterDawn~ :P
secondly, i really dislike roxio, i uninstalled it the first day i got my old computer~ i would strongly suggesting trying Nero or even the free DVD Decrypter as a burning utility~
in terms of your tdk, you are at about a 50/50 chance to get the dreaded CMC MAG or FUJIFILM media codes...but, i do not have any PERSONAL experience w/ tdk..but, CMC MAG codes are bad news ANY way u slice and dice it~ :)
sony on the other hand, i am very familiar with the 8x dvd+r media, which if MADE IN JAPAN, are definitely authentic Taiyo Yudens, great media...check my sig for the actual media ID on them.
the made in taiwan 8x dvd-r/dvd+r formats i have read are pretty decent as well, with the SONYxxx code on them, so, i think it's not a media problem if you are in fact using the Sonys'.
what type of burner are you using? might need to upgrade firmware for better media compatibility as well. let us know and both creaky and i can provide you with more assistance. have a good one~

@kivory666 - cheers for the extra info, i have read mixed reviews of TDK media, wasn't sure about Sony so much, but didn't feel confident to comment more as hadn't used either myself. Over to you, my youngest (she's 4 bless her) is in a school play in a little while so i gotta nip out..

I Thank you guys very much for the info, I have a TDK dvdrw4040-N
I found the firmware update. I wasn't sure what to use. I checked the code on mine and It was v108 I updated with 10c , and flashed it, After I did that I used DVD Shrink and tried it again, It Worked. I can now use 8x dvd disks.. Thank you again for the info.
