First off beautiful job on the tutorials S.P. I am downloading Shrink/decrypter and the tutorials as I write. You obviuosly put alot of time into those, to help us rookies copy (Back Up) DVD's.
A bunch of Questions in 1: In the Shrink/Nero tutorial you mention shrink can't rip all encryptions so download a back up one, and you gave 3 choices. Will shrink say it can't do it? Then do you fire up the other decrypter. If you use DVDD as your back up, should you then just follow the Shrink/Decrypter tutorial and burn that way or is it better to use nero as the burner if so how? Put it this way: If you S.P. were using Shrink/Nero and your back up was DVDD and the DVD wouldn't decrypt with shrink what would you do?
How would that work with the other 2 (DVD43, AnyDVD) that run in the background?
lastly, after reading a little about anydvd, I see it has a feature "Jump directly to title menu" to get rid of the FBI thing and begining trailers, it looks like Shrink can do this can it? can DVD43 do this also?
Could you guys please eat, drink and sleep with my wife for me too? Sorry if these are really dumb questions but I am an old dog trying to learn new tricks! I haven't even used my DVD burner yet!
Thanks

"In the Shrink/Nero tutorial you mention shrink can't rip all encryptions so download a back up one, and you gave 3 choices. Will shrink say it can't do it?"
--> You'll know it when it happens to you.
"Then do you fire up the other decrypter."
--> Yes. Try DVD Decrypter next.
"should you then just follow the Shrink/Decrypter tutorial and burn that way or is it better to use Nero as the burner if so how?"
--> Not sure what you're saying here. Shrink uses Nero as it's burning engine... which means when you start burning in DVD Shrink, it's actually just using Nero in the background. So, it wouldn't matter whether you're using shrink (which uses Nero indirectly) or Nero itself.
"How would that work with the other 2 (DVD43, AnyDVD) that run in the background?"
--> Don't think these programs running in the background would have any impact.
"Could you guys please eat, drink and sleep with my wife for me too?"
--> Would you? ;-) jjk.

What I mean is, if you are following the Shrink/Nero tutorial by S.P. and it won't decrypt. You say to then fire up DVDD. So now basically you are following the Shrink/Decrypter tutorial right? This tutorial makes no mention of Nero. Is Nero still involved or do you then just follow the Shrink/Decryptor tutorial which doesn't use Nero?
Thanks, I hope I explained it a little better this time. New to this, sorry.
Any answer for the anydvd/dvd43 question?

DVD Shrink does not burn, it just encodes. You need a program to burn your DVD, either Nero, Decrypter or some other program. If you cannot rip your DVD using Shrink, because it does not always do certain protected movies, then use DVDDecrypter to rip to you hardrive then use DVD Shrink to encode the movie and you have your choice of burning with Decrypter or Nero.

ScubaPete and I are glad you enjoy the guides! They are a lot of work and we constantly upgrade them. Pete writes them and I turn them into webpages. Pete and I talk about the technical aspects and try to keep things correct and easy to follow. We always like to get feedback so you can e-mail us if you like.
And of course we want you to ask your questions here at AD!
Anyhow...
Shrink will not say it can't do it. It will usually come up with some sort of error (crc) and freeze up. At least that's what it does to me.
That is a pretty good indication of ARcoSS protection.
You will just need to run DVD Decrypter or DL AnyDVD. Don't try Decrypter when you have AnyDVD installed. They are not compatable BTW.

Thanks for the answers guys, especailly for the tip about AnyDVD and decrypter, as I do have them both installed. One last thing. To the people who have used both, (frank and pete probably forsure!) Is AnyDVD really worth the money or is using DVD Shrink,DVDDecrypter and DVD43 just as good? Does AnyDVD have a lot of features and options that the others don't? If so what are some of these? I have no problem forking out the cash for AnyDVD if it is worth it and does alot the others don't!
Thanks again guys!!!!

It really comes down to your preference on what you use (money aside).
I use AnyDVD w/ Nero Recode 98% of the time. For me it's a time issue and I like AnyDVD's feature of removing the warnings (this doesn't work on all movies though usually the Sony Arccos ones). The other 2% I use different programs to play around with. DVD Decrypter and Shrink will do everything but it will take longer. Hope this helps some.

It really is a matter of preferences. AnyDVD is really responsive when it ccomes to updates but LightningUK at DVD Decrypter is pretty fast himself as far as getting updates out. AnyDVD is a no-brainer once it is installed and is perfect when used with Nero Recode 2.
I personally rip with Shrink and burn with Nero most of the time. If I need a more potent ripper then I use Decrypter then Shrink and Nero to burn. I do try other methods though. My trial of AnyDVD worked very well while it was installed. I don't like DVD43 but other people do.

When I popped in a dvd (meet the fokkers). I then fired up shrink, clicked "open disc" instantly it started analyzing the DVD. This took 22min (scuba petes guide said 30 sec. to a min. Did I do something wrong?). When it finished I unchecked some of the audio etc. etc. got it ready and clicked "Back Up DVD". Now it started analyzing it again only now it says 12 hours??? is this right? I was following scubapetes guide for shrink/nero and what I got from it was once you clicked "Back Up" it burned to your hard drive then opens Nero and burns automaticaly. Basically my question is this. Is shrink supposed to analyze twice and take that long even before burning to blank dvd takes place?

Make sure your drive is in DMA mode.
Check out another one of Scuba Pete's guides:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide1.html Shrink will 'analyze twice' is you have deep analysis checked. 12 hours is still too long though.

One thing that will make the analysing run slow is a problem with the source disc. Try a different movie or two and see if the problem is occuring with all movies or just this one.
BTW I added a link at the top of each ScubaPete guide so you can print them. This way you don't have to print all the nav links and other stuff. You can e-mail me if it does not work, you think it sucks or if you see any problems elsewhere. Pete and I appreciate your input.
Cheers,
Frank

Scuba Pete,
(And the many other information gurus I have recently become addicted to)
First off I would like to say that only a month ago creating back-ups of my DVDs and PS2 games was only something I thought of as "boy that would be neat to do". Since then I have spent numerous hours absorbing information and knowledge from people like you through these forums. I learned very quickly not to just blurt out a question but to investigate it on my own first. These forums are more than the perfect tool to do just that. I have used your guides/advice for DVD Decrypter, Media selection, DVD Shrink along with many other programs like Nero and could not be happier. I have also read almost every page and helpful topic of yours at the dvdplusvideo website. Keep up the great work. With that being said I would like to show my gratitude, as many others have, and say THANK YOU. I would like nothing more than to someday help one of you out the way you have me. I do have a few small questions though that I haven't been completely able to find answers for. I am probably just searching with the wrong key-words or something.
1. I have downloaded and installed DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and DVD identifier along with others you have recommended. My burner came with the newest Nero suite so I have many of the other Nero programs you often refer to. I have used several different methods to back-up DVDs as you have suggested to others in order to see which I like best. Being the newbie that I am, I have not really seen a difference at this time using Decrypter/Nero as opposed to Shrink/Nero or Shrink/Decrypter. Is there really a combination that works better together since I have all of the options to choose from? Is there one that has more options or functionally when referring to advanced features and what you can do to modify the burn process? I know Decrypter has the able to decode a higher percentage of discs than Shrink. But other than that?
2. When I was looking through and using your guide on Decrypter there is a step that tells you to select ?mode? then ?file? and un-tick ?verify? I was unable to locate the verify that must be un-ticked to reduce errors. I haven?t had any errors yet but I like to be prepared. Another thing is that when I go to burn my files to disc I am unable to select a speed slower 6X. I always hear you recommending to use around 2X. Any suggestions?
3. Should I just leave all the default settings alone in Shrink and Decrypter? I have read your guides about hard to rip discs and what settings to change for those conditions. But what about when I first install and use these programs? Are there settings I should change that will increase the performance or quality of my burning experience other than what you guides say? I read your guide for using Shrink and how to change the size of available space on my blank media to custom and 4300 or so. Other than that is there anything that I can do to make these programs and Nero the best they can be? Not to say they aren?t great already. I have not created a single coaster yet. Knock on wood.
4. I have a Sony DRU-720A DVD burner with dual layer capabilities. As long as I don't mind forking out the extra cabbage for DL discs there is no need for me to use DVD Shrink is there? I still plan on using it or Nero Recode most of the time to compress the movie down to fit on a single DVD-R disc. But for those top of the list favorites would it produce a noticeable difference in quality or life enough to justify the more expensive discs?
5. The first time I opened and used DVD Decrypter it asked me for my region code and the region code for the disc I was ripping. I didn?t remember you ever discussing this initial region code setting. I thought that was the point of the DVD Decrypter software, to remove all that. I know I can only change it 5 times so I thought I would ask you about it.
Thanks again and in advance for all your help.
P.S. Sorry for writing a short novel.

Thanks for visiting dvdplusvideo.com. Both Pete and myself have tried to put some helpful info there.
1. I still like to use many combinations of programs to copy with. Mainly to keep my hand in so when I reply here at AD I know what I'm talking about. Quality is subjective and up to you.
2. It's here:
Open Decrypter then click on Mode, click on ISO Write. Under the destination menu.
3. Try out different settings for yourself. For example Pete recommends changing the file size. Once you get to know your media, you will figure out if you can make the file size bigger. I use the default DVD-5 size because I use good media. In fact I can sometimes go bigger than the default file size, say to 4474 MB. Risky? Yes. Less compression? Yes. Better quality? Slightly.
I burn an occasional coaster because I experiment. Burn speed for example. I have tried burning my media as fast as it would burn. It fails occasionally. If I'm just doing a back-up, I burn at 4X regardless.
4. DL is the way to go for best quality. You are using little or no compression. It is easy enough to rip a disc and see if it will fit. Decrypter will give you an error message if it won't. In that case, a little compression would be needed.
5. DVD Decrypter detects the region protection on the disc:
"Possible RCE Protection Found!
Please select the region shown on the disc's cover/case/box."
Look at the cover/case/box, find the region code and tick the appropriate box. In most cases the correct box will be "dotted" so all you need to do is select "OK". This will make the copy "region free". DVD Shrink does about the same thing.
Hope this helps,
Frank

I built the website and encourage anyone who wants to put stuff in it to send it to me. That's what Pete does. I'll make a webpage out of whatever gets sent to me.
As always though I encourage everyone to keep Afterdawn at the top of the list when you need help or want to help someone out. You can actually get a Afterdawn Tee Shirt by posting a guide here!
