I need some help here, I just bought some verbatim dvd-r from best buy the other day. I've been using verbatim for a while but when I started using these discs, dvdshrink kept giving me an error during the burn process with nero. I don't know if my burner (Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16)or maybe its the media. For some reason also, I cannot change the burn speed on shrink or nero to 16x. Any help would be trully appreciated. Thanks. I've included a log file if anyone wants to take a look.

What are you trying to burn from i.e. dvd movie? Do you have the latest from Shrink? May be it's a bad pressed or it could be some protection code - I could be wrong. I'm not quite sure myself too due to the "log" doesn't showed much of errors. Have you tried to burn with DVD Decrypter or any other program beside Nero? It's better to compress/encode with Shrink and then burn with Decrypter - this method will be more successful. Give it a try and see what happen.

On DVD Shrink, after you've compress/encode, then click on "back up," select "Target Device," then select your Back Up Target with "ISO Image File and Burn with DVD Decrypter." Hopefully someone with more skills and knowledge will be able to solve your problem.

i have only heard good things about the Verbatim 16x media, im assuming it's the MCC coded ones...so, i would gather that you might want to see if there is a firmware update for your memorex burner to allow further compatibility with this newer media.

i would shudder to think you would use memorex media, since i would STRONGLY suggest AGAINST using any memorex media, your choice of media is very good and for me personally, i've had flawless backups using verbatim mcc coded discs.

your log looks decent, i think firmware might be the issue here with your drive being able to burn onto this new media~

Something looks wrong here - you are trying to write a 1Mb file to a 4.36Gb DVD???

Whatever you are trying to burn does not appear to be in a DVD compliant format.

I was backing up my DVD of Bruce Almighty using DVD Shrink. Any indications that shrink may be doing something wrong?

Hello,

Are you burning at 16x ?

16x is just in the movies, don't try this at home kids :) :)

I suggest burning at 2x, and make sure everthing works !
Then 4x, 8x, 12x and 16x and see where SPEED fails you.

Most people buy better quality and/or burns at a lower speed and all their problems go away !

My 2 cents...

No, I'm not burning at 16x. The problem is that I cannot burn at all using these 16x discs. The burn process seems to be aborted everytime it initiates. I think it might be the media I'm using, maybe its not compatible with my drive. I used a Fuji 8x disc that worked fine just now. I'm glad to know that my drive is still working, the sad part is, I spent about 50 bucks for these verbatims that I cannot seem to use...off to ebay they go...

Has anyone had success burning at 16x speed?

It appears there a few people here that believe it will not work, or is it a media/burner issue, or software?

I sure would like to upgrade to a 16x from my 8x.....they're so cheap.

TIA,

Rich

You can burn at 16x speed, however the probem is that there are some older standalone players that will not recognize a disk burned at this rate. Some standalones are sensitive to errors and burning at 16x is more apt to give you disk errors.

Ineresting, never would have thought standalones would even know/care what speed it was burnt at, providing the data was layed out properly.

Well, if that is the case, that just plain sucks.

Thanks,

Yip, nothing at all even at 2x or 4x. Weird how the box of this burner says 'takes the guesswork of what kind of media to use." Well, thanks for the help again guys. I'll be posting the Verbatims on ebay soon. Anyone interested just let me know. Again, Thanks.

Got this from your first log post. They are made by MCC. I would try a firmware update or eeprom reset. That burner is a rebadged litey (pretty sure). Eeprom reset cured all my problems with my litey and verbatums. Burns verbs better than any other media now.

Plextor is fixing to realease a new burner. Pioneer drive is also very solid. Wonder who makes the memorex drive? You should be able to go to manufactors website of most drives and go with the media they reccomend.

Good Luck

I read that plextor is discontinueing bitsetting capability on their new drives and pioneer has never had this feature. Personally I booktype all my dvd+r/rw media dvd-rom for greatest compatability and would not want a drive without this capability. I am fairly sure the new memorex 16x dvdrw drives are made by lite-on and could be improved upon with a little tweaking. My drive of preferance would be benq.

From your second log - still believe that the problems lies here - if you are trying to burn a DVD, your last address to be written should be similar and a litte less than the last possible write address.

5MB to me would suggest that your DVD has not been copied correctly or that you have insufficient free hard disk space.

Assume that you have copied the ISO to your hardrive and are attempting to burn the image from your hardrive to a DVD.

Well, I just returned the drive to Best Buy, actually traded it with another Memorex drive. (It was the only one they had cheap enough to avoid paying out of pocket for an upgrade). For some reason the discs now work. =) The only thing now is that its slowest burn speed is locked at 6x. Kinda wanted it to stay at 4x. I've burned about 10 movies without problem so I'll stay on this media until I run out (100 spool). Thanks for the help again fellas, 'preciate it!
