I live in India and have a modded ps2 in mint condition which plays everything including gt4 dvd9(pirated)but my sister bought a original and new dvd god war from canada and it wont play at all.
I am stumped!! any suggestions are welcome

If it is modded in a way that you use swap magic, and the swap magic is 3.0 or higher than it would still work.
And if it were a chip, most of those will play both systems (PAL & NTSC)
Exactly what is the system doing when you try to load the game?
Have you tried loading it with Swap Magic if you have it?
If not Swap Magic what kind od mod chip do you have?
What version PS2 is it?
Modded system can mean so many things.
well my ps2 is modded so it doesnt matter if it is PAL or NTSC its version no. is 39002(i think europe)and the mod chip is messiah and i bought my ps2 in 2002.
if i bought swap magic which version should fit.
I never used swap magic infact i never had to.I am telling you my ps2 plays anything and everything....either this is dvd9 specifically god war problem or something to do with modchip version as mr.teiler and the senior member wrote.
Well the only thing i can think of is that the mod chip may not be able to play DVD9 (dual layer). Which God Of War is. Have you tried turning the chip off and trying the game?
Do you have any other dual layer games to try like Gran Tourismo 4, Champions of Norath, Champions reutrn to Arms.
Swap Magic will help you with playing both NTSC & PAL, but most chips can do that. If you could find out what model Messiah chip you have then you can look on the internet and find the specs on it and see if it can play DVD9

PSX CD/CDr and DVD movies: Insert the disc and hold reset for a few seconds to turn off the PS2 (standby). Turn the PS2 back on by holding reset until the blue light on the eject button lights up.
You should always turn the PS2 off (standby) for a few seconds before changing between modes (PSX, DVD, PS2 - copies and originals).
To turn the modchip off (to play PS1 games that may detect the modchip): Turn off the PS2 (go to standby) and hold reset for at least 5 full seconds. The next time you reset the PS2 the modchip will turn itself back on.

Swap magic will work but it does not support DVD9 games and will not help with this issue.
Since those others work i do not know why an original copy of G.O.W. will not work.
Some of the better mod chips (DMS and Matrix Infinity) do offer what is called a flash upgrade. You download it and burn it to a CD-R and play it in your PS2 and it flashes the chip with all the upgrades. Do not know if this is available for your Messiah chip, you will have to do some searching.
