Has anyone ever heard of this brand. Pengo blank dvd's Model# 47300, are being offered on Newegg.com. They come in what is called a "Hamburger Box" packaging. I have never seen this brand or type of packaging.

Thanks in Advance

never even heard of the brand in my years of practically using(trying) 90% of all brands ever made~ also, i would think that any sort of manufacturer that uses the word "hamburger" in their marketing strategy needs to be shot~ who was the genius that thought of this one??? must have saw "jack in the box" with their witty commercials and figured, "i could do this with blank media, just make it sound enticing and delicious and im good to go"...gimme a break~ just my opinion of the matter.

i wouldn't trust this blank media, i'd much rather go get a REAL hamburger for lunch~ :P

I used Pengo DVD-R discs almost a year and 4 months ago; it was a 10 pack all coasters. I stopped a 5 disc, I could not add regular documents to the media. I was using JVC, Sky and MMORE media with no problem. Co-worker attempted to burn on his Pioneer and Sony with the same results. The store has Pengo DVD-R DL media, I refused to buy. Bad experience; however, that could have been a very bad batch. You are always taking a chance.

Interesting i just bought 2 spindles of pengo dvd-r and so far no problem. Then again I am using a dvd +- burner by nu tech. I assume since the burner is made in taiwanmaybe its more compatible with a wider range of blank media. So far running my burned product through dvd infopro I haven't picked up any errors. Now whether or not after a few plays on a stand alone dvd player will they still be good remains to be seen. I am no expert but until I get my ty02 discs in I would suggest try to backup a dvd and see the results. Most here would say verbatims and taiyo yuden are the best but I have yet to have a bad burn. Just adding my 2 cents.

A lot of no name discs like that are very hit and miss cause they use different manufacturers and such.

....and they don't use good manufacturer's. No reason to be coaster media when there's good media for virtually no cost difference. (Well there's initially no cost difference, but when the discs are unreadable or fail then the buyer usually gets the hint and buys brand name stuff). The link in my signature says it all. I'd be interested to see some PIF scans of these discs

Matt,

I have a I/O Magic DVD+- 4x burner. I just puchased a dual-layer external HP 630e works great with JVC, MMORE and Sky discs. I have used verbatims and ridata media with no headache or coasters. Only time coasters happen is on my part. Back to Pengo media, I do not know if the I/O Magic does not prefer that media. The co-workers Sony and Pioneer models did the same. Using Nero Ultra to burn to disk, no at all movie; but some documents. They would error out each and everytime. It was almost as if the media was not properly prepared at the factory.

- lol, what can i say

Sky media - the one reference i could find mentioned Optodisc - crap media no less
Mmore media - found one reference that had MCC media code, however i then found another Optodisc. hmmm....

As i say, i'd like to see PIF scans of those discs, look here -http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298

@BC2002#1,

I'm not a big fan of using Nero. I use clonedvd2 after ripping with DVD Decrypter and compressing with dvdshrink. Some would speculate crappy media but for some reason I'm thinking Nero adjusts to the media. Not sure if pengo has been around long enough to be identified as problematic with Nero. Using my laptop with an external nu tech dvd dual format capability I haven't had too many coasters except with the cheap princo (yes I was experimenting). The mods and members in afterdawn always speak from experience so I go so far as to say if pengo dvd-r are crap then soon enough someone will post a review on them.

- the biggest problem is if this media is crap, it will still be crap; Nero is by the by here. Newer firmware for various drives may well come out that caters for recognising this media. I read far more posts about questionable or crappy media than i reply to. It's just not worth buying no-name or questionable media as it just causes so many problems in the short and long term. I was personally stung by 100s of (at the time) supposedly good disks which i think you saw yourself on my own thread in my sig.. however ppl make their own media choices, it's their money at the end of the day. I and others will be here to sort out the logfiles when the bad media fairy strikes!

in no way was I trying to insinuate that nero was finicky or you(to include all the members) of AD was wrong. The nero comment was a personal experience and maybe its due to have roxio on my pc as well. Just read a post on drag to disc conflicting with nero so maybe thats my problem. I was simply stating that my experience so far has been decent with pengos. With nero it seems to be a fight to start the burning process and it may be due to something I'm not looking at. I haven't been around long enough on AD to dispute what you and the other mods say. Most of my posts since reading your thread on crap media has been I am waiting on my spindle of ty02. Until then I have pengos to experiment with and none have been coasters. If they are crappy media then I can experiment and will never have to worry about having a cold beer sitting on the table. I'll simply leave a stack of coasters and won't need to worry about water stains. Anyway like I said if you or any of the mods took my post as disrespect it wasn't meant in that way.

I often edit most of my posts as what i'm thinking doesn't always translate to the screen well. that'll teach me to rush my replies, i'm trying to get ready to go to the Crick Boat show and i shouldn't have rushed that reply..

edit- previous reply edited and i've scolded myself severely :)

oops forgot to mention to other newbies. I am not an expert but I'm learning like the rest of you. Always take heed to what a member, junior member, senior member and definitely a moderator says. They have been down the road we are traveling when it comes to dvd blank media and burning issues.

@creaky next I'm trying to learn how to read burn logs. I don't burn anything over 2x and still get a finished product in under an hour. Any ideas on what it means or how I'm doing it?

i only recently started getting the hang of Nero logs, though they're really easy. Other product's logs are a tad harder to read, though around here all i seem to really see are Nero logs so i home in on those.

I don't follow exactly what you mean but 4x should equate to about 15mins, and 8x about 8mins. Post some more info and i'll have a look later when i get back from the show.

I've been reading that slower burning is less likely to cause errors that will affect playback. My burner is 16x but I prefer to stay in the area of 2-4x which fluctuates but never goes over 4x. Hmm did i mention I have some verbatims left over from a 50 pk but waiting til I "perfect" my newfound hobby before using them to backup movies. The backup is usually done in under an hour around the 35-40 minute mark. I was thinking its pretty darn good turnaround time for a laptop. Umm I see mods in other forums but who is the mod for this one? Wondering since I'm still in newbie status do they bypass whatever I post.

Sky media was the only choice at the time of deploying to the desert and not take the originals. Sky held up very well, only failure was do to sand. The military exchange was way too much or empty shelves. Lately, I have been burning was current Nero and JVC media. It is good; but not as good as Ridata.

Matt72... You answered your own question... Roxio and Nero are not compatible both loaded on the same computer. This revelation was made known about a year ago when i posed the question to both Roxio and Nero. At the time, I was big on Roxio because of it's backup program.

@matt72 - slower burning is to reduce the chance of error and also as standalone players are not the same as pc dvd drives. Also, for example, PS2 lasers are quite picky. I personally haven't had problems with any of the standalones/PS2/dvd drives i have used, other than crap media, but i read far too many posts from ppl who do have players of various types that do exhibit problems.

As for mods, there are a couple around these particular forums. I don't know them personally (and have behaved [i think] myself as haven't been at the business end of them yet), but always recognise their posts/humour. They are reasonable and also participate in threads from time to time. If you've not been bounced off a mod i guess just means you're either behaving/doing nothing wrong/or being of use to others. They're always hovering around keeping an eye on things as you'd expect.

@BC2002#1 - i just don't personally have the money to waste money & time on discs/or redoing discs. Also very importantly i'm of the kind of personality where i become very distrustful of things. What i mean is, for instance, i've had media problems myself, so will always distrust a particular brand of media forever more, or i have brake trouble on a car; i take it to a brake repairer and i still have brake trouble shortly after. I will then distrust all brake repairers forever more. I subconciously apply that mentality to most things (hope that makes sense). But back to media, i have no problems with decent media. If i even have one problem with decent media, i switch to distrustful mode.

@T_Outlaw - for years i used to be a fan of Easy CD Creator by Adaptec, before they became/or were absorbed by Roxio, mainly version 3.5, and version 4 a bit. But when v5 Platinum came out, and was so horrendously full of bugs, i switched to Nero. And stayed there ever since. Again my reply to BC2002#1 applies here too, i am forever more distrustful of Roxio products since their shameful shambles that was Platinum. It also turns out (and i've seen this quote by Nero staff) that packet writing software (some of which Roxio creates) is incompatible with Nero, my personal burner of choice.

if you weren't so far away, i'd sell you some of my GENUINE/AUTHENTIC TYs~ i got them on sale, so, i wish i could share the prices of the U.S. with you~ :P

perhaps one of these days..when you finally run out of your verbs, just remember me...it would be expensive to ship these TYs to you from Cali, but, it would probably be cheaper than buying TYs over there~ :P just a thought~ hehe.

dunno if they will be bankrupt, since they ARE one of the largest optical media manufacturers in the world..and 2ndly, you have to consider how many people don't KNOW the truth about it's CMC MAG "crappiness." :)

it's like saving people one life at a time~ can never actually reach them ALL, just gotta save a few here and there :P

maybe in my next life i will become a dvd-media superhero~ to save the ill informed from bad quality media~ :P that would be classic, ridding the world of CMC MAGs and making the homes of people safe for flawless burning~ hahahaha

good day to you all~ sorry to take this thread into a different direction, but, as i was the 1st to reply to this thread, i still stand by my initial statement...c'mon now, "hamburger packaging?" making me all hungry~ :P

@ T_Outlaw
I try to read and use the search function before I ask questions that have already been posted per the site rules. There is alot of information and in between burns i'm using following creaky, kivory, flip and scuba pete posts since I see their replies the most. So far I have backed up about 30 movies over the past 2 weeks using their info and guides.

@ creaky

yes the search function saves alot of times and thats where i learned to burn @ 2x. Experimenting with pengo hasn't been bad, no pixelating, skips or anything bad but I'm more concerned with longevity. i don't have alot of cash to keep replacing backups if they go sour after 6 months. Therefore I'm keeping it strictly practicing until i get it straight and then use my leftover verbatims. I never knew how good they were until I kept seeing the brand in the forums and ran them through dvdinfo pro and kprobe. When my ty02 get here (hoping they are not fake since I bought them from amazon) I will be a burning fool. I see other media outlets that may have them for cheaper but being a novice tends to keep me in a well known trusted online ordering service. After a month or so I may try another source of ordering media online. Kivory and creaky keep me on my toes trying to absorb their knowledge and add a little of my own so maybe i can sort out some folks issues with burning. There are so many different media to try out and after following threads i see sometimes its better to spend a few bucks more for quality than quantity resulting in coasters *cough...princo..cough*

If no one has noticed by now I am from the states and at times have to re-read posts if they have the UK lingo in it. By that I mean sometimes it takes me a few reads to get the humor of the post.

Still searching for a site with an informative review regarding media types. From my understanding some blank dvd media are better for data and others for movies. Anyone have any good links or point me in the right direction?

@matt72 - here's a couple of sites i and a few others usually recommend - http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm & http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

Obviously there are other sites, and afterdawn is jammed full of stuff about media. As regards recommended (DVD) media, the only (quality) brand i can speak with direct experience of, are the Verb datalifeplus's; i haven't personally used the Fuji's, Sony's etc etc, but quite a few other members have, and they will always chip in as you've noticed. I always try and keep my eye on media threads so if i ever do find the money to try some others out, i will know what to buy (especially TY as they're faked a lot).

i try to not use too much UK'ism in my posts, but i'm sure some leaks thru from time to time; and i'm afraid i'm prone to what would probably be considered too much humour. However i always try to get back on topic as best as i can :)

I'm only familiar with a few of the dvd-related programs so can only comment on those, but something i would like to at least look at is RB/CCE. For now i've subscribed to a huge epic of a thread but still haven't found time to go right thru it (well i'm still on first page) and attempted installing any of it - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/97052. I just love DVD Shrink, and occasionally DVD Decrypter, as i just want to make quick and decent copies of movies in shortest amount of time.

Knowledge-wise i've picked up a helluva lot from the members you mentioned, and quite a few more besides, and just try to add my extra bits n' pieces where i can. I am staying clear of the PC-related forums for now as i'll never come up for air and be posting all night instead of watching the x-files :)
