DVD burns but it cannot be read in home DVD Player

The last few DVD's I have burned (Team America, White Noise, National Treasure) are burned onto a disc successfully but when I try to play them in a home DVD player an error message comes up that the disk is scratched or improper format? I recently switched to a Pioneer DVR-A09XL burner and I am using Nero. What am I doing wrong?

What format of DVDs are you using? DVD-R? DVD-RW? DVD+R? DVD+RW? DVD-ROM?
I could do this all day...

I am using TDK 8X DVD+R. I burned DVD's that worked on all players with my old HP 2X DVD burner but now that I have this dual layer Pioneer the DVD's will only work in my newer Samsung HD DVD player

sounds like a compatibility issue between your standalone and your media. The easiest thing would be to change media, maybe use +R booktyped to -ROM format (if your burner supports bitsetting). Or you could get a different player.

Something else to consider. Some TDK dvd+r media is made by not so popular CMC Mag which by itself can cause compatability problems. CMC Mag IMHO sux. I would suggest trying to booktype them dvd-rom but pioneer is not capable of doing this. Maybe try slowing burn speed to 2.4x. Use dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to determine the media code. Here are some media codes for TDK dvd+r's

TDK DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG.E01)

I've had the same problem using Sonic 4x DVD+R. I simply used a different player which solved that problem, but I've not heard the term "Booktype". Please explain the term, and how to use it. I use the NEC 2100AD 4x +RW. Dell Dimension 4600 P4 2.66Ghz 80GB HDD 512MBDDR

Booktyping is a utility certain burners have that allows it to burn a DVD+R or DVD+RW so that players will see them as DVD-ROM (the original DVDs you'd buy in a store), therefore increasing their compatibility with DVD players.

Another thin you can try is using the "DVD-Video" setting in Nero. It will check for DVD compliancy making sure you have the correct directories and files and will give you the best DVD compatibility. Before, I sometimes chose burning as UDF, and my Sony standalone would not be able to read it, but it played fine on my PC.
