I have a new fliptop PS2 and am looking into playing my backup games.

I have a few questions, hoping you fine folks would be some help.

1) Do you have to have a Slide Card to switch out games with the fliptop? Or can you use something to push the little button in telling the PS2 the top is closed?

2) Is there anyway I can download the files that would normally be on the Swap Magic disc? Like an ISO, so I could burn it myself rather than buying the actual Swap Magic disk?

Thanks for your help.

Hello fellow newbie,

1)If you have a flip top, then you do not need the Slide Card to make Swap Magic work, vice versa, the fliptop is meant to be an easier solution/a more convenient option then the slide card...

2)You can download and burn it to a cd and dvd, but it won't work. Swap Magic has to be originally pressed, just like regular PS2 games.

3)Some advice about this forum, this forum is meant for backing up legal softwares that you own, any talk about downloading and pirating copyrighted software is illegal and forbidding in this site. It might get you banned from this site. Just looking out...good luck...

Thank you. I appreciate your feedback.

One more question.

For this product, http://www.gamedevilonline.com/swap-magic-36-discs-only-p-51.html, it says you can load programs off of a USB storage device.

Can I use a USB Storage Device, say an external hard drive, and run emulators off it and play SNES, GBA, NES games, etc? Is there any sort of special way I need to store them on the device and how do I load them?

Thanks.

do you have a slim ps2? if so, your going to need to buy a modified fliptop or the slim tool. As for a usb hard drive, you need usbextreme.

Uh, kayy..

So, to play backup games on my slim, fliptop PS2 with Swap Magic, what do I need?

Also, someone explain this...

"[Swap Magic 3.6] includes an advanced function - Programs Loader. This function allows you to load your own programs which are stored in USB mass storage device/memory card. Just plug in the USB mass storage device/memory card and boot your PS2 with Swap Magic Plus v3.6. Then, your program will be loaded automatically."

If you've already got the fliptop ready and installed, all you need is Swap Magic. I don't recommend USB Drives with USBAdvance/Extreme as those are fairly faulty.

You can go ahead and just buy Swap Magic. Swap Magic 3.3 is more than good enough for most games. 3.6 increases compatability by just a few games, if you want to play dual-layer games (like GT4) wait until the newest Swap Magic comes out.

But if you just want to run normal DVD5 sized games on your fliptop, all you need to do is buy Swap Magic. There is no way around it, as original games have a barcode with some information on them, not only can DVD burners not write this on a disc, they can't even READ it off of a PS2 game.

So, now that you have the fliptop, the very least that you need to play backups is Swap Magic. (Just don't buy 2.0 or below, if you're not going to buy the newest, don't go before 3.3, it'll save you a lot of headaches)

Is there a difference between the fliptop that comes custom on the new slim PS2 and the fliptop that you're talking about?

Also, I'm not looking into running full PS2 games through the USB port, I'm simply interested in running emulators and ROMS off it. Is that all I need?

PS2 games are actually pressed DVD/CD discs, they are not burned. PS2 games use the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc to identify themselves to the PS2 unit. The BCA is not part of a disc that you can burn on, it is only replicated on pressed discs.

So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

With the boot-discs (swap magic) you need a 'tool' to open
the tray without pressing eject for the backups to work.

YES, there is a difference. With the fliptop that comes on your slim ps2, you can't play backups. You either have to buy a new modified fliptop, or get the slim tool.
