Also, it depends on you dvd player, (Hopefully you can watch the dvd's on your TV) and it would definatly depend on your DVD recorder if you wanted to record the TV output.

Most stand alone dvd recorders are single layer (dvd 5) recorders. Therefore if you tried to copy a dual layer movie (dvd 9) you will need to split it onto 2 dvd 5 blanks. You also need a decrypting device in line between the player and recorder. Cost for this around $75. to $100. Yes it can be done but its not the easiest way to go.
I did it!! It was just a matter of experimenting. Of course I can record TV, it was made to do that. But I also got it to record the TV when I play a DVD movie in it. So now I insert a DVD into the player and hit record on the recorder, presto I'm recording my DVD's (the one's I own for backup). No it doesn't record the DVD with menu selections and special features, it records the movie in play. But you can tell the recorder to use EP+ mode and record up to 6hrs or something (the movie will be of lesser quality). Then you can play the extras after the movie to record those too.
Here's the technical guide:
Required -
DVD Player (I used an Oritron brand, $60)
DVD Recorder (I used an ILO brand, cheap $120)
RCA Switcher/Modulator (Mine takes in 6 RCA devices where you can switch from one to another or scan/auto mode, $20)
TV of course (I have 52" projection)
Hookup -
RCA cable from DVD Player output to RCA Switcher input.
RCA cable from RCA Switcher output to 1st TV RCA input.
Coaxial cable from RCA Switcher cable output to DVD Recorder cable input.
Coaxial cable from DVD Recorder cable output to TV cable input.
RCA cable from DVD Recorder output to 2nd TV RCA input.
Configuration -
TV is on channel 3.
DVD player is on and ready with DVD movie, I'd start recording at the menu where you hit "Play Movie".
RCA Switcher switched to the correct RCA input.
I'm not sure but I did a little adjusting to the TV menu where you specify what devices play on what channels and AV inputs. This probably isn't necessary.
Then select the record from source on the recorder to record from coaxial cable, the TV will then show the DVD player playing.
Hit record and insure it is recording.
Hit play on player and the movie will begin while the record records.
Simple. Now I just need to configure everything so that I can go back and forth to whatever I want to do without having to switch cables and stuff, so I can do everything from the couch.

Got it all figured out now. Everything is set up perfect. When the DVD Player is "off" the Cable is "on". Turning on the DVD Player automatically puts the TV into DVD mode. Then I switch on the DVD Recorder select coaxial source and start recording while I watch. When finished I turn the DVD Player off and I'm back to watching TV. Doesn't get easier than that.
I also figured out how to add special features and stuff. When you hit stop during a recording it adds a "section" into the DVD. So hit stop after the movie is over then go to a special feature and record again (on same DVD). Now when I insert the recorded DVD into the Player it shows each section to select from. One selection is the movie, one can be "The Making Of", one can be the "Comentary", and so on.. all on the one recorded DVD.
I wish I knew all this years ago but recorders were pretty expensive then. So movie makers are protected from having DVD's recorded exactly right, aside from hacks? This makes since when you think about bulk recording movies and selling them. So if one records a rented movie the makers are still making profit from the rental. Is it illegal to record your own movies? Here's a movie I recorded, I lost the original, all of them:)
