Hi

I have an AVI file which is 238,498KB. It contains about 35 mins of PAL TV video. Gspot says the following:-

Video Codec: DivX 3 Low-Motion, Bitrate: 773 kb/s, FPS: 25, Qf: 0.124 bits/pixel, x/y: 576x432 (1.33:1) [=4:3], I/L: 2 vid frames (80 ms), p=480 Split: No

I put it on a VCD by decompressing the audio in VirtualDub and then using TMPGEnc's standard VCD template. It only took up half the CD.

Given the parameters of the source file, would the quality be improved by putting it on SVCD? How can I tell for this and future files?

Also, in TMPGEnc, when selecting the source Aspect Ratio, do I need to bother using the 4:3 setting or does it make no difference?

Thanks a lot.

Source should almost always be 1:1 VGA, keep aspect ratio 2.
Only rarely would you change that.
I would go SVCD for that particular AVI.

Thanks mate.

Why do you suggest that (about the SVCD)? I'm interested in knowing how to make such decisions and why.

Take the running time of the video, and it's total size in bytes.
divide bytes (238498) by length (35).
This gives you 6814k per minute of compressed Div3 (minus audio, it's about 6000k).
This is the highest quality setting available for that codec.
You'll get a better SVCD from it.
If you have a 250 meg AVI, and it's over an hour, make a VCD.
If you have a 500 meg AVI, and it's about an hour, make an SVCD.
If you have a 750 meg AVI, and it's about an hour, make a DVD.
Of course this can vary widely, depending on the codec used for compression.
Generally, DivX versions at about 6000kbps video bitrate or higher, make better SVCD or DVD. If it's less than 4000k, VCD will probably be lots.
This also depends on the aspect ratio/framesize. Full frame D1 video takes far more bitrate for quality, than 320x240.

What I use to determine if a file is more suited to VCD or SVCD or DVD is the Actual Quality of the Image and the resolution of the Image....

With a Low Resolution source file I would not encode it to a High Resolution format because the resizeing has a Large Negitive Impact on the Quality...So say a File that is 320+240 would be More Suited to VCD than SVCD or DVD because the Source resolution is closest to VCD Resolution...For Instance a file with a resolution of say 640+272 would be More suited to DVD than VCD or SVCD .....
