I have a question which i don't seem to have come across on these boards yet... I am running a Matshita uj-830s 'Super Multi Drive' in a toshiba laptop running windows xp home. I successfully used dvd shrink and nero to burn several dvd-r's then got several failed burns due to SCSI adapter, now my computer is identifying all the blank dvd-rs i insert as blank cd-roms. Although i understand i should be using 'recommended' media and am currently not, I don't understand why several runs worked perfectly (from different source dvd's, and some directly from hard drive once got stuff htere with dvd shrink), and play in my dvd player, and the drive won't recognise exactly the same media. The drive will still play dvd's and burn to cd's as normal. No system changes were made between the last successful burn and the subsequent 12 (or so) failures. I will gladly go out and buy 'recommended' media as soon as i establish that this is actually a problem with the media and not with the 2 week old drive. has anyone got any useful ideas? I have checked but there don't appear to be any firmware upgrades for the drive (currently 1.50) and have tried uninstalling and reinstaling the drivers. Am getting slightly desparate here!

I get the same thing in my computer, but it never stops me from burning the DVDR.

Get a program called DVD Identifier (Google it) and check the media that way. If you bought it in a store, there's a good chance that whoever you think made the media didn't make it, and also there could be a handful of manufacturers making the media that comes out of the same spindle.

Have you looked into a firmware upgrade? That solves these issues sometimes.

Do you have Nero? If so, try to burn a movie on one of these and see if you get an error. If the burn fails, post your Nero log here and we'll help you sort it out.

I can't burn with Nero onto them as it sees them as blank read-only cd's, so it won't even let me attempt to burn to one (the burn button never becomes active unless i do that with the drive open then close it and it locks up for a bit before telling me either that the drive is empty or as above). I have now successfully used other media to burn to and accept i will just have to buy more expensive discs, but am just plain confused as to why it worked erfectly for 4 discs then in varying degrees (i ended up with several where it has burnt but then hit the SCSI target error so the files are there but the disc i think wasn't finalised)... I could post a log from one of those burns, but as it now won't even attempt to burn i don't have logs. I just spits the disc out and says 'give me the right disc' (or words to that effect).

Windows doesnt recognize the blank dvd+r.
Happens to me all the time.
But Nero or decrypter ar alcohol whatever im using at the time.
Will burn just fine.
Its probably because windows has Roxio intergrated into it.
And we know the only place Roxio software belongs is the 'Circular file'.

it's quite long and involved - i think i have managed to extract just one of the unsuccessful burns - let me know. I have also had a couple where the dvd file compliance test failed, but then worked on a rerun so i can live with that.

okay, but as i already said, i don't think there is a firmware update and i'm trying to understand what's going on here since it appears to have been a change to the system, rather than a consistently poor media. I have tried other media and am sure that is ultimately what i will do, but want to know why the first few were absolutely fine and then i had progressively worse errors. I don't mean to sound ungrateful for your response, squizzle, but i did say there isn't a firmware update in my first post, and also that i was trying to establish whether it was a media or a drive problem so some logic behind your answre would be helpful - because to me it isn't consistent for the media to work fine and then not at all without something else being at fault?

I would definitly try a different media and/or install the latest firmware on the burner !

I have the luxury of having more than 1 PC at home, if I want to proove it's the drive, I move it to the 2nd PC with a CLEAN XP install. If the problem still occurs, there's a good chance it's the drive.

95% of the time, if not more it's BAD MEDIA, need's a firmware update, or plain software problems/conflicts.

In rare cases it's a bad drive.

Out of curiousity, what's the speed you're burning with your back up? Did you aborted it or did Nero failed to burn and you then aborted it? And like others have mentioned above, it won't hurt to try some other high quality media at this point.

re: firmware update - I am convinced that there is not a firmware update for this drive, but if anyone would like to prove me wrong i would be grateful!

I only aborted the burns after Nero insisted the disc wasn't right, and sat there waiting for me to put a blnk dvd-r in despite me putting several in.

I have tried with other media and it has burnt successfully, so i will be using those in future, but i'm trying to understand why if it's a basic compatibility issue the first several worked fine?

I recently bought a Toshiba Equium A60-181 Laptop with the same Matsushita DVD drive fitted and I'm not convinced there's a firmware upgrade available either (at least not that I can find).

You are not alone as I?ve had a similar issue with my drive and an additional problem besides:

Initially I bought some Sony DVD-Rs which wouldn't record and came up with an obscure "PMA update failure? message, thus wasting a fiver. Changed to TDK which cured the problem (in that I can now make copies) but at only at 1 x speed.

I understand the drive is "rip locked" at 1x speed, to prevent (or greatly inconvenience) pirating. This is a great shame, a bit like owning a sports car but with 2, 3, 4 and 5 gears blanked off at the gear stick.

So does anybody out there know of a ?hack? to disable the ?rip lock?? For the reason above, I can't see Matsushita themselves being too keen on providing one even if they did issue a firmware upgrade.

I get the impression that this is a fairly new drive and the market for a ?hack? is not out there yet, but this may change with time.

Regards

When this occurs, does Nero list your drive as a dvd drive, a cd drive, or both? It should be listed as both, although Nero has a nasty habit of sometimes showing the drive as just a cd drive and conseqjuently IDing everything as cds. It does this often with my external DVD drive.

sony dvd-r how odd, because they work fine on mine

nero shows it as both cd and dvd drive

not sure about the rip locking, i used DVD Shrink to copy to hard drive, then Nero to burn to dvd. burns at up to 8x (disc limit). encoding in DVD Shrink takes ages though, so that may be where the rip locking comes into effect. still, copying a dvd in highest quailty options only takes about 2 hours (with deep analysis and quality options activated, so not prohibitive.

Try different media, although I would also get some RW media to fool around with. The SCSI error is a generic error message. If different media work, media is the culprit; if not, it could be a hardware problem. You could disable the drive using Device Manager and have windows reinstall also. It could also be a problem with Nero. Try burning with DVD Decrypter first and see if the problem persists. Use RW media until you are successful. It's also possible to get the SCSI error at finalization and still have a playable disk. It's something that happens with Nero for whatever reason. I almost always use DVD Decrypter these days for burning.

Hi guys

Ive only just recently started burning video dvds, but Ive had this kind of problem popping up occasionally when burning any type of dvd. Apart from windows detecting the blank dvd-r as a cd, another problem comes up sometimes. Sometimes when I try burning, the record buffer stays empty, with progress not budging from 1%. If I leave it for a minute or two it may pick itself up and finish the burn, other times it stays there until Nero says the burn failed.

Ive got a Pioneer DVR-109 (with latest firmware), using Nero Express 6 (came with it) with latest Nero updates. I'm using no-name Laser 8x blank dvd-r disks. Heres the latest error report that I saved:

domboy:

In my experience there have been several causes of this:
1. bad cable thwarting communication.
2. corrupted Nero.
3. corrupted burner driver
4. bad media

Your drive firmware seems up to date and your media is TY which is generally good media. Here's a full frontal assault approach to the problem.

Check the cable to your drive and replace with another if handy.
Uninstall Nero.
Download the Nero Clean Tool and run.
Use device manager and uninstall your drive.
Reboot twice
Do a clean reinstall of Nero.
Purchase and use RW media for testing.
Slow your burn speed to 4X or slower.

If the above works and you get a good burn but you encounter the same problems with the TY media, then your burner probably doesn't like the media for some reason.

This is the only thing that looks funny to me, usually this is blamed on media, possibly corrected by firmware or ASPI updates or change in media.

But at the same time, that might not be a problem at all. I see a lot of that, and as long as you don't get a key medium error or SCSI error (which you don't have either), it's not necessarily a problem. Mine show up like that all the time, and I always get good burns.

So I'd say try to re-rip and compress the movie and try again.

Hey, I have a Pioneer 109 with 'leading-out' issues. I believe the problem is directly tied with the firmware and Nero.

I've owned a Pioneer 107 for a year and it has worked like a charm. (Not one coaster!)

So I figured the 109 would rock!
(The main difference is that 109 supports dual-layer burnings.)

I removed the 107 from one computer to the next and dumped the 109 in its place. The 107 still spins sweetly in the second computer.
The 109 is running on XP Pro with the lastest version of Nero. (Same as the 107)

What happens?
During the ending phase of the burning process Nero 'freezes at around 96-98%' -before a lead-out can be created.
The disc then appears empty!

*It's done this at least a have a dozen times on a DVD and once on a CD-R.

What I did?
Since I knew the discs were not empty ...I opened them up in the 107. (It recognized the files!) Nero detected the unclosed session and gave me the option to close/finalize.

So Wuz Up?

First off, I have spoken with many people that have had similar problems with dual-layer burners. (Other brands too.)
It's obvious, the comunication between Nero and the drive is not 100%

So I hope Ahead/Nero or Pioneer will address this issue.
I haven't tried any alternative programs. Nero has always been a reliable choice so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an update.

@enthusy: can you post the Nero log here (without serial number of course) that way we can take a look? Also if you are using DVD Shrink to encode, try to make an ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter, just to rule out software.

Hey, here is the log of an ISO/image failing to lead-out.
(I tried ruling out any software issues by performing various burn tests with sonic-foundry and roxio products.) All tests were successful but that doesn't mean much since the problem occurs randomly. I'll have to do further testing before I can point a finger at Nero. ***I'm pretty sure this is a firmware issue.
(I had a Plextor drive do the same thing ...updating the firmware fixed the problem.) Unfortunately, pioneers final revision (1.50) doesn't do the trick!

hmmm... a couple of things I noticed. The first is this
Quote:
11:55:50 AM #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 245
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2256015 (501:20.15, 4406MB)
You may be burning too close to the edge of the disc, which can cause problems. A lot of members here limit the encode to 4300 MB to avoid this, so that may be an option to look into.

Also, there's this:
Quote:
Disc Manufacturer ID: AML.....
I personally have never heard of AML so I don't know their quality, but there's a program called DVD Identifier (http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/) which checks the Media ID code and then offers a link to a database comparing it with other media and giving you compatibility info.
