i'm ripping the led zeppelin 2 album and its way too big to put on a 4.7gb, so i need to get rid of some of the audio...so which would be the best to keep? i have 5.1 surround.

my choices are:
1) pcm stereo (1443 mb)(it says 2 channel, but i play it on my 5.1 system and all the speakers put out sound)
2) 5.1 dolby (418 mb)
3) dts 5 channel (707 mb)

i'm leaning toward keeping the pcm stereo. any feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd keep the 5.1, it takes the least amount of space at 418Mb. To me I can't tell a difference between DTS or AC3 5.1

Keeping the DTS over the Dolby Digital soundtrack for this particular dvd would be a good idea since the main draw to this dvd is the sound.(Plus, the video wouldn't suffer too much) I, unlike Ppower can tell the difference between dolby digital and DTS, and DTS is better. Now, for people who don't have a 5.1(or 6.1 or 7.1) suround sound system, the sound you will get out of your old stereo receiver and speakers with the PCM stereo soundtrack sounds way better than the (downmixed)digital suround soundtrack.

The reason you still hear the pcm sound through all your speakers is because the ProLogic or one of your SFC modes is spreading the sound to all your speakers.(still not as good as discrete signals to each speaker)

@wolfniggr
I would say that is a bad idea.
I would say the video may suffer because I hate to see video with no audio.
I would say that most people want DVD disc's that play audio on most players. Not just the DVD players that you use.

@rhgindc

As I have said before.

The audio specification for DVD-Video requires a mandatory audio format be present before any optional audio format is added. A optional audio format like DTS should only added as an additional audio format when a mandatory audio format is present.

Mandatory Formats (One is needed)
NTSC
AC3 Dolby Digital or LPCM
PAL/SECAM
AC3 Dolby Digital or LPCM or MPEG-1 or MPEG-2

In other words, a disc that has only DTS audio doesn't follow the audio specification for DVD-Video and should not be made. I'm not saying it can't be made, but should not be made. You will just get a disc that will not play audio on many DVD players unless they have a DTS receiver connected.

Keep the AC3 Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2 Channel PCM
If you have space on the disc, add another. Maybe DTS as an option.
If someone tells you differently, they are wrong.

It is rare that a suround sound receiver and a dvd player made within the last couple of years lack dts capability. Though not all people have equipment with dts capabilities, it doesn't mean that dolby sounds better. As far as the video quality when keeping the dts soundtrack for this dvd, it really wouldn't hurt.(If you only back up the dts soundtrack, you may not even have to use compression) Remember, it's Zeppelin not Lord of the Rings.

I have never seen a dvd with just a dts soundtrack. At the very least there is always a 2.0 dolby soundtrack(dolby is the standard). With the advances in dvd authoring, it is posible to have all kinds of soundtracks on a DVD9.(like the one in question)

You're entitled to your opinion, but so is everyone else.

Hey rhgindc, keep which ever soundtrack sounds best to you on your system. After all, you're the one listening to it, not us.

You are right.
But there are opinions and facts.

My opinion is backed up by facts.

The DVD's I backup follow the audio specification for DVD-Video disc's.
Your's don't.

The Preferences of DVD Shrink will not make a disc that does not follow the audio specification for DVD-Video disc's.
You have to manually choose to do that if you think you know better.

This forum is for the most part, to answer questions, for people who need correct answers. My answer was based on facts.

How to deal with that is your opinion.
