For some odd reason, the DVD's I burn come out great at the beginning for the first 30-40 mins of the movie in my Sony DVD player, but towards the end they have the occasional the audio/video glitch (sometimes annoying and sometimes just a terrible burn). I can never get a clean version of the movie. I've taken extra precautions hoping that it will fix the problem. I turn off all unnecessary programs, I raised the priority level of the program in my comp (windows xp), I bought an extra hard drive so that I won't be reading and writing on the same drive, turned off my screen saver. I still don't know what is going on. Can anyone help? =)

My specs-
256mb ram
1.7 gHZ
Lacie d2 lightscribe burner USB2.0
2 hard drives

You didn't mention one of the most important things for a good burn--the media...What type of disks are you using and with what speed?

You may want to slow down to 4X (some would even suggest down to 2X.)
Do your burns play well on your computer? If so, it could be some incompatibility with your Sony standalone. Standalones can become finicky over time. Also many on this forum would suggest you change media to TY or Verbatim..I use Maxell (id: mxl rg03) and burn at 8x with no problems.

Try some of the above suggestions. Also what burning software are you using?

I'm using Nero Ultra 6.0. I'll try burning at 2x and buy the media that you recommended. Also do you think there's a problem with the encoding provided by DVD Shrink? I bought a 2nd hard drive thinking that reading and writing onto one hard drive was causing an error. This is not true right? Should i return the hard drive. It's a Western Digital 120gb.

I use Shrink and Nero combination with no problems. (Watch your compression levels, especially, if you compress full movie). You can always uninstall and re-install the programs, just in case.

You didn't answer my question, do your burns play well on your computer? If they do, then it may well be your standalone.

The encoding, burning process does not require two separate hard drives. Unless one is too small to handle your files. Also you may want to upgrade your RAM to at least 512mb.

The movies play fine on my computer, but when I watch them on the family DVD player.. there's a 50/50 chance I'll have a clean "glitch free" movie. Also I'm just starting to get to know my new DVD burner. I never had one before so I am a newbie to this.

Sounds like its your standalone then.
Try changing media and slow down the burn speed.

You are doing fine! And you came to the right place you ask your questions. AfterDawn has some good people here with the answers.

Happy burning!
