What model is it? Is that the new 720A? If so, then I think it's good to go and I think it does support both DVD-R/+R DL media - if I remembered it correctly. In addition, I owned the DRU 710A (BYX4 current firmware) since last November 2004 and it still burning flawlessly. However, the choice is all yours to make.

this is what it said one the web page

Sony?s newest Double Layer, Dual Format DVD/CD burner has several DVD recording performance increases. DVD+R burning speed is a blazing 16X max, burning a full DVD in approximately 6 minutes. Double Layer Recording speed has increased to 4X max. DVD+RW speed has also increased, with DVD+RW burning at 8X max and DVD-RW burning at 6X max. What hasn?t changed is the DRU-720A comes bundled with an unbeatable Nero 6.6 software suite and also includes a black front panel to match black colored PCs.

Pioneer 109 60$ on Pricewatch.
If your backing up ps2 games this is the one you want.
$ony 720A does not support slower burning speeds,
I know ppl who have problems with that burner not burning less
than 4x.

I would go with the Pioneer 109.
It probably a better deal, Its a Proven top of the line Burner.

Both myself and my friend have Sony burners and they are great, worth every penny. I have the DRU-700A and he has the DRU-710A and they work flawless with both movies and games. I can assure you that the post was just an isolated incident. I use TDK (4X -R) and Philips(8X -R) discs for game and they both work every time
Maxell 8X DVD+R for movies also work real good.
And the free copy of Nero really comes in handy when rebuilding an ISO file or doing movies, it will work for games but i rarely use it since i like DVD Decrypter for it's ease of use. I don't know much about the Pioneer but if Jizmak says it is good i would take his word for it. I know the Sony is about twice the price, but in the long run it has paid for itself many times over.

Sometimes people just need to update their firmware regularly to enhance burning performances and media compatibility. My Sony DRU 710A BYX4 has been burning movies and games flawlessly since November 2004.
