No!!! Do not apply labels to your backed-up DVD's. It causes them to wobble, and you'll have all kinds of data reading errors. Trust me, people who applied labels and realized their mistake too late have been searching the forums for ways to remove them (like gasoline! heheh!). Seriously, applying a label to a DVD is one of the WORST things you can do to it.

There are printable DVD's out there, that allow you to use your printer to print right onto the top of the disk. I don't know much about this, but you'd definitely need the right kind of printer and the right media to make it work.

Personally, I just stick with felt-tipped markers.

Off center labels can also cause an unbalanced situation resulting in skips and freezes. If you print your own adhesive labels, DO NOT attempt to apply the labels by hand, even if you have a steady hand & "good eye" for such things. Use a label applicator which will perfectly align and center the label each time. Even the best media will skip & freeze if the label is even the slightest bit off center.

Thermal transfer printers print directly on the polymer top protective coat & yield professional permanent results without fading. Direct thermal printing will not result in imbalances or exhibit any of the other maladies associated with adhesive labels if not stored properly. Though permanent and more resilient, the downside is that they are also not as "pretty" as a full color inkjet printed adhesive label. We recommend either thermal printing directly onto the DVD or inkjet printing directly on specially coated DVD's.

Unlike CD's, DVD's have both a lacquer as well as a polymer top coat. Thus it's perfectly safe to use a Sharpie® permanent marker.

I have a question about making labels. Does scanning a DVD cause problems or any marks on the DVD?

What? Do you mean you're going to place the DVD top-down on a scanner? Well, that would be okay, as long as you protect the bottom side (which will now be point up) with a paper towel or something before you close the lid to the scanner.
