Paper labels on dvd backups are not recommended because of problems that you are experiencing. If you want to label or apply some some cover art it is recommended that you use inkjet printable media and an epson R200 or R300 printer which have a dvd tray and print directly on the disc. They also come with all the necessary software. You can get one for about $80. I love mine and label all my backups.

There's no need of going through that added expense with a new printer and all. I've got nearly 1000 DVDs I've backed up. I've used cd labels exclusively with no problems. I use the Lexmark Z53 printer with an HP flat bed scanner. Wonderful results!
I've used CD Stomper cd labels and Neato. I prefer Neato Full Coverage Economatte cd labels. Go to Neato.Com they always have a good deal on them in pkgs. of 100. Also, it'll be a lot easier for you if you've got cd label making software. I prefer Surething CD Labeler Premium. I think its ease of use, great functionality and the allowance to use various types of labels is great! Another great place to shop is Shop4Tech.com. They also have label software at a good price. I buy most of my supplies from them anyway, even my DVD and CD cases and blank DVDs as well. Also, got a good Memorex label software with labels at Walmart. Price was a little more than I wanted to pay for the labels alone. If you've got Nero you should already have a label maker. You might end up spending $25.00!
Having said all that, Mort's way is better because it takes out a few steps! You don't have to put labels in the printer and you don't have to peel the cd sticker-label off and physically put on the DVD! Hope this helps!

YOBUZZB,

That doesn't stand true in every situation. Personally I never had any problems with stick on labels either but a lot of people do. Inkjet printable media is the way to go. So your out $80 for a printer but it works great with photo's and documents too. So the media costs a little more, well worth it IMHO and besides you can print clear to the hub instead of having the big ring in the center with stick on labels.

I agree with mort i used to use the stick on labels and some of them played fine in my dvd player but in some of my friends players they had all sorts of problems..the epson printer is the bomb!!

The best way to go is just a plain "sharpie marker" to write on your blank dvd-r/+r period. However, I've used NEATO made by "Fellowes" in the past and still use it randomly with Glossy Paper for at least 600 dvds back up and I have no problem of playing them. If you centered it correctly and smooth the label to fit the DVD-R/+R, then you shouldn't have any issue.

On the other hand, I'm thinking about the Epson R300 soon to be owned.

Personal preference and/or trial and error applies to many things, why not this? I may end up buying that printer myself one day! Actually, I saw one in a client home. Good color xfer from screen to printer.
Point taken Mort.

yobuzzb,
Yeah it really is a pretty good printer alone. Prints cover art and photo's well besides printing directly on cd/dvd's. It has 6 ink cartridges and I can get a complete set of aftermarket cartridges (every bit as good as oem) online for $16.95 plus $4.95 shipping. The black cartridge alone costs more than that for most printers. Not to mention the ink cartridges last longer than other printers I have been around. Only disadvantage is it's not an all in one. No biggy I bought a flatbed scanner and like this set up better anyway. Have a good one.

Mort, I'd like to know also. If you were buying them from abacus, it appears they've raised their prices. I used to get them for the same price, but just noticed they doubled?

I have a question to add to the help with DVD labels. Is it alright to scan a DVD in a scanner? Does it mess it up? I scanned one DVD and looked at the back to check and it looked like someone had poured water or something on it. I checked to see if it played and it still did, but I didnt play it all the way through. Also, I didnt check it before I scanned it. Should I be worried?

Why does anyone bother?
What is the point of labeling disks?
I have over 200 and have yet to label or write on any of the disks.
The chance of error is not worth it.
Leave them be!
There are more important things in life.

Scanning the disc in a flatbed scanner should cause no damage whatsoever.

So how does the Epson R300 get the image to print on the DVD, from a memory card, or I guess from the computer? So then since the DVD is in the DVD tray, it knows exactly where to print on it, and the size of it???? Sorry for the stupid question.

TIA,

Rich

Anjel I have hundreds of disks made with an ink jet labeler. CD Stomper Pro kits work just fine. You can use sure thing labeler or I prefer Acoustica CD Labeler (www.acoustica.com). Why are you scanning disks on your scanner. Go to www.CDCovers.com and simply download the cd label art, open your label program and insert the download image and print. Easy as pie.

There are several places to download labels from the net or you can scan your own. The R200 and R300 come with software. Labels off the net are usually already the correct size. If you scan your own you will probably have to resize.

Mort81,

So which disks do you use that you can print almost to the hub. I usually buy from Meritline, and their selection wasn't that great for these kind of printable disks. This sounds like the best way to go (Epson R300), then the labels route that I have been using for such a long time.

Many thanks in advance,

Rich

Many thanks for the reply, I did see those, but wasn't sure if those were the good Verbatims or not. Plus, contrary to general consensus, I also use 8x, with never a problem, of any kind.

Again thanks,

You're welcome. Their a little pricy but you won't be disapointed. I might go with a 100 pk of TY's from rima or supermediastore next time and save about a dime per disc. I use only dvd+r because I booktype them dvd-rom and the +r hub printables are a little harder to find than the -r's.

Mort,

Booktype them DVD-Rom? Are you saying that a dvd player will think they are DVD-ROM? If so, how is that done, if that is possible, boy would that save me some money in dvd players, and I could start using my Bravo player which plays rom and -r's?

Inform the uninformed, please,

Rich
