Im no stranger to backing up dvds, im very protective over my DVDS and have been backing them up for nearly a year now. I purchased a Dual Layer DVD Burner today, and I was told there are no such thing as DVD-R DL Discs, only DVD+R DL. As my DVD players at home only play DVD-R discs, I am wondering if this was such a good purchase. Are there only DVD+R DL discs on the market at this present time?

You are correct. Depending on what brand of dvdrw you have you may be able to booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom making them much more compatible. What brand is your dvdrw?

Thanks for the quick reply, I bought it for £40 here in the UK, a lesser-known brand called "Emprex", I can continue to compress and backup DVDs if the DVD+R DL discs are uncompatible, if they are, I will use the DL Writer solely for backing up files on my HD

I am not sure if emprex dvdrw's are bitsetting capable. I don't think they are though.

The fellow that is looking for DL -R media appears to live in the UK given that he bought his burner with pounds, and it probably hasn't reached their shores yet.

Yay finally DL DVD-R! Took the DVD Forum long enuff to stop bickering / beating around the bush on signing off on the DL format.

Now all of us poor shlubs that bought DL DVD burners hafta wait and see if the mfcs decide to update the firmwares of earlier DL burners to accept the -R DL media. More than likley this isnt going to happen , the drives themselfs probably cant burn DVD-R DL and the mfcs will just shrug theire shoulders tell you "told you so, shoulda waited now go buy our latest and greatest burner"
