Hi everyone, I copied 2 movies I own for my brother to have, and they played perfectly in my dvd player, however when he tried to play them on his, they would play for about 10 minutes with no problem, but then the picture would begin to distort and the disc would completely freeze up. My question is why will it play on mine and not his? Both DVD systems are realtively new.

Sounds like his DVD player doesn't like the media you used.
What media did you use? What was the burn speed?

P.S. This is a common thread/problem (playback problems).

I used an 8x speed to burn it, and it was memorex brand dvd's. What I don't understand is why does it play fine for 10 to 20 minutes before starting to act up, and then not playing at all. Then if you take the disc out and start over, you can move to the point you watched it, then play it again for the 10 minutes or so before it does the same thing. I mean its obvioulsy not a problem with the dvd since it will play in mine, but could there be something with the dvd player that won't read the disc, or something he can do to the player to make it read without stopping playing?

OMG! - 8x on a Memorex disc. You need better media. But for now you should try burning at 2x or 4x due to this being atrocious media..

Ok would that be the problem with the playback? Just the speed I used to burn?

no, though initially you can drop the speed and see what results you get. But your resultant movie may not last very long as it's on crappy media - 'fraid you have one of the worst makes/makers of media there is. If you give us more details we can happily look into it, things such as possible downrev firmware on dvd burner, lack of resources on your PC, crap or incompatible media, DMA issues, software not quite setup correctly etc. Do you use Nero by any chance ?. if you do, the logfile is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log; all burns are appended to this logfile, good and bad; edit out your Nero serial number and post the last section of log (scan thru the log and you'll see where the sections stop/start).
If you use something else, let us know and one of us will advise further..

creaky I'm with you buddy, I'd bet the farm that all problems will be resolved by switching from that el crapo memorex to a good quality media eg: verbatum (azo dye), genuine taiyo yuden, fuji, maxell, or sony. God memorex should have to reemburse everybody that has bought their media with compesation for all the headaches and frustration. Memorex sucks, if your backups even play now, give em 6 months and I bet they won't. Memorex has caused more playback problems than any other media I know of. Ok, got that off my shoulders.

bobbboy,

As a rule of thumb most here recommend burning at 4x even on premium media as an insurance measure to lesson the possibility of write errors.

Ok thanks guys, I will try a different brand. I'd just like to know thought what made the disc play fine in my player, and also play fine in 2 different computers, but would only play for a short period of time on his.

Oh one more thing, would it work to copy the copy from a memorex to a different brand, or would it be better to use the original?

thats a big part of the problem; copying from crappy media usually results in uncopyable movies. if it was a good quality copy (on crap media or quality media) then you can do a simple copy/paste from a copy, thus not having to do the whole re-encoding process. But at least you could still copy from the original. Unless you have extreme cases of media rage, ie problems such as i had with crap media - see here from my sig just for a laugh - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298

Ok thanks for the help, I am going to run over to a friends house and pick up a verbatim dvd, I saw you mention them as a good brand, so we will see what happens from there.

Ok I used the verbatim dvd, and everything seems to work fine now. Is it really that simple that memorex sucks and that was the problem? Also is verbatim a good enough dvd to purchase a few to have? Thanks.

There are many people that have problems with Memorex, and there are those who do not. When I scanned my old Memorex for errors they came up not good. Verbatim, however, are good quality media, you would be better purchasing them, or any other good media such as TDK, Sony, TY, Maxell or Fuji in the future.

and ANOTHER bites the dust, welcome to the TY/Verbatim camp bobbboy~:)

Verbatims are definitely something good to have on hand and i would personally recommend you using them for your future backups~

check my sig for further recommendations...for the Taiyo Yuden section...both FUJI and SONY branded 8x dvd+r media MADE IN JAPAN are genuine Taiyo Yudens too~

i would try to get a few of either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim dvds for flawless playback~ this should be a lesson learned, memorex..i laugh at your media quality~

good luck in your future backups~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

@bobbboy26 - nice to hear the Verb started what should be a trend in decent burns for you. Not that i'm biased to Verb's or anything :)

My first batch of TY are due in a couple of hours, i sense my Verb's taking a back seat from now on...

Yeah I put verb and TY about even right at the top of my media preferance list too. Although the PI, PIF scans are just a little better on my set up with verbatums, I have never had a bad burn with either (that was result of media anyway). Those media choices provided by arniebear were for the most part good choices but be aware that some of the TDK dvd+r media is made by CMC MAG and I would probably avoid their +r media to be on the safe side. Not saying arniebear is wrong, just modifying his list a little. I'm sure I'll get a good arse chewing, huh arniebear

@Mort81

No a$$ chewing from me you are correct, some TDK do have problems, I have gotten some lately that have given me a headache. They used to be better than they are now, but they are coming out fair in scans and I have been using them to backup grandaughters movies, she keeps getting sticky sucker all over hers, that is one reason you do not give a 4 year old originals :~)
