Hello, I purchased my last spindel of these Memorex disc's and the first 25 out of 50 disc's worked fine now all of the sudden my Sony Dvdrw won't even read them. Here's the code I got from one of the "good" ones.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:CMC MAG. AE1]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG. AE1]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3MB = 4.38GB (4.71GB)]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have the Latest FW (BYX4). Is there any other reason some of these would work fine and others won't? This is the LAST time I will buy this junk!!!
Thanks for all who reply :-)

HHAHAHAH from the "good ones"...judging by that code, there isn't a single "good one" out of your entire batch~!! LOL
CMC MAGs are the WORST out of all the manufacturers out there...the first 25 that you say "worked" for you, i bet they won't "work anymore" in a few months, i give it less than a year tops~ :P
check out my sig. do yourself a favor, don't waste your hard earned money on crap~ take my suggestion to get some decent media, it's YOUR money~
good luck~

anytime~ i always recommend the REAL "good stuff" to anyone who has had bad experiences with the dreaded CMC MAGs~
the fuji's if MADE IN JAPAN i have hundreds of those...dvd+r format, they are YUDEN000T02 coded as in my sig. they are FLAWLESS, very typical TY quality discs.
my verbs in my sig are also VERY good, quality wise is comparable to my TYs. MCC coded media is trusted by not only me, but many others on here will agree with me~
do you prefer dvd-r format for your backups?? im just curious as by the firmware version you stated, i think you have the same sony i am using as well...the dru-710a if i am not mistaken??
i've noticed liteys and sonys (which are rebadged liteons i have both of them) are more sensitive to dvd-r dvds. i have had a LOT of success using dvd+r format and booktyping them to dvd-rom...it has served my purpose very well and ALL of my standalones play them with no problems~
just worth mentioning, my TYG01 4x Taiyo Yudens are all dvd-r, they work great in my sony, but, i have since switched to dvd+r for higher compatibility booktyping to dvd-rom. :)

Yes I do have a Sony dru-710a.
I don't prefer dvd-r's it is just the only type I have used since getting my burner back in January. I will probably end up trying +r media in the future. Thanks for the suggestions.
Best Buy has Fuji's on sale this week I will probably pick those up for now.
Really thanks for your help, and have a GREAT week :-)

you are very welcome, i actually just got back from my local best buy and picked up a 100disc/spindle of the Fujifilm MADE IN JAPANs...i opened up the pack and tested the 1st top disc...naturally, to NO surprise, the YUDEN000T02 coding~ :) im happy to say the least~
have a great week as well, hope you've had a pleasant memorial day weekend~ i for one, had to work today, but, i made it to best buy before ALL the 100packs were sold out~ i picked up only 1, they had about 4 spindles left~ i left them for the other folks :P didn't wanna be greedy this time and wipe their entire stock out~ LOL
this sony is a very good burner, i've had mine for over a year, still very reliable~ good luck and have a good one~ :P

Very good advice kivory. Not only do lite-on's (and rebadged liteys) perform better with +r media than -r media, you also have the added advantage (as you stated) of booktyping dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom therefor increasing compatability. I'm not saying litey's don't perform well with good quality dvd-r/rw media but rather prefer the +r format. I'm a little partial to +r media anyway. Here's some good reading. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113

i just used the force and could tell there was a litey/Verb/-R conversation happening. I thought i'd chip in with a voice of support from the -R corner, on my Sony DRU-700A (rebadged Litey) with VY08 stock firmware. My Sony eats -R like they're going out of fashion.
Tomorrow my first batch of 8x TY's (TYG02) arrive so expect some PIF scans from me soon. I was going to try +R for a change but thought i'd do that later.
As to Memorex, my bad media psychiatrist (no the letters after his name aren't CMC) advised me not to comment :)

I also am in the -R corner since this is what I have been using because my old Toshiba standalone only plays that format, but since my experiment with dual layer and +R which my Plextor booktyped to -R I am rethinking my choice. My old Toshiba played the +R beautifully and had a really great picture. On my next order I think I might get the +R. But either way as long as they are TY it doesn't matter the burns still come out excellent.

i'm all about recruiting for the TY camp~ lol
as people have seen again and again, it's once you get BURNED with memorex/cmc mags that people begin to look for better media, some have been burnt worse than others and for that i feel for them, but, it's better sooner than later to switch~
i have had equal success with both the dash and plus format on TYs, i just personally prefer the dvd+r so i can booktype them to dvd-rom, i have found this to be 100% compatible for ALL my standalones as well as the ones i give/loan to my family/friends on their players~ :P
seems like i finally got creaky to "pull the trigger" as i stated before and i wish you the best of luck w/ your new TYs~ i use a sony burner as well and i've had no problems with either format~ :P
this thread has basically become a memorex bashing thread~ :) but until venom puts in his 2 cents~, let the bashing continue...i don't want to lead newbies astray, but as we have all found out, the people who have replied to this thread have OBVIOUSLY had their fair share of bad experiences w/ memorex/cmc mags..so...it continues...
good day to you all and raise your voices HIGH, TY will lead you to victory~!!

Yes, I had my bad experience with Memorcraps after one spindle I knew they were bad. I switched over to TDK and then Verbatim when I could get them at a reasonable price at retail stores. I did not want to buy online because I did not know how reputable the dealers were. Then I found this forum and read and learned. If only newbies would take the time to read some of the threads or search before posting they would see just what they need. Start with free programs DVDShrink and DVDDecryter and then buy others when you become more comfortable burning, read the guides, use good media, know what your burner, computer and standalone player specs are, keep your firmware up to date, and do not run a lot of programs in the background or multi-task. It would be much easier for them :~)

There's nothing "factual" about what any of these guys are saying about memorex media. I've always used memorex and see NOTHING wrong with the results. If you have a prob and your media is to blame...switch. Memorex works for some, and not for others it seems. I've tried Memorex against Verbatim against several other brands out there, and I'll stick with Memorex. Not b/c the others are bad, but b/c Memorex delivered the same results for less money. Oh, and I've heard the hype that in cases where Memorex media works, you can bet that down the road the discs will become unplayable. Also untrue. I can pull out my oldest copy(been doing this for several yrs) and play it like it was my newest copy.

as you mentioned dvdeviant, what works for some, might not for others~ :P
i am not going to start a media war arguement here~ while my buddies philipman and venom will support what you say about memorex~ i respect their opinions, but we just have differences in terms of what DOES work for our individual setups.
have a good day and best of luck with your memorex, buy as many as you can so for those who support ME in my TY camp, we don't need to argue about such trivial things~ :)
all the power to you~ by definition, what you consider "Factual" or not can be summed up with my thousand plus burns on quality TY media PERSONALLY...i will not disagree with you if memorex has worked great for you, then terrific, YOU have found something that works well on YOUR setup, this might not hold true for the MANY members out there that are new to dvd burning, i offer my advice and opinions based on MY extensive research and experience, if they choose to go with what i say about good media, then at least i can help them through any difficulties if they should arise with media im very familiar with. :P
everyone is entitled to their own opinions, if others have found that using TY media produces flawless burns, then that is THEIR decision to stick with something that works. if they found memorex to be the "holy grail" for their backups, then so be it~

yup, all i can (carefully) add is that while i/we won't knock anyone that has genuine success with such as Memorex et al, it would be wrong for us to recommend the same media to any newbies due to the sheer number of ppl (and not just in the afterdawn corner of the internet) who have immense problems with such products. I post/read predominately on afterdawn these days but always try to find the time to frequent other types of forum/websites to get a balanced view and see the same problems caused by the same media (for the majority) ; even simple google searches unearth so many problems with this stuff.
So...DVDeviant - i'm not gonna disagree with you either, whatever works for you is great for you, just remember we others would be lacking if we recommended such things to everyone else as we would be doing them a dis-service. Afraid the links in my sig say it all from MY experience. Good day to you and it's genuinely refreshing to hear good results with this media.

well said "mini-me" LOL...sorry, i just had to~ :)
i really didn't want this thread to become a flame war, everyone has their own opinions on whichever manufacturer they personally like
with good or great success~
i did forget to add what creaky just stated in the post above me, nicely done buddy, i don't want to be a "dis-service" to others who frequent this forum and go out and spend their hard earned money on media that is not so highly regarded not only on AD, but MANY other websites as well~ a simple google search as creaky said will show you PAGES of problems w/ memorex media from around the world~
all i have left to say is that i will always look at CMC MAG as a CRAPPY manufacturer and from a google search or a search here on AD for that matter, there are COUNTLESS others who will agree with me~

Memorex produces bad media because they use cheap mfr, however, they are not the only ones to do this. This is an excerpt from an article on the advantages of using good media
Quote: DVD Media Problems - Bad - defective - Cheap Inexpensive DVD Media
There are expensive high quality DVD's and there are the inexpensive brands or "no brand". The quality control on the $1 or less media ranges from poor to non-existent. You may "luck out" and get a good batch, or more times than not, you won't be so lucky. Often times the cheap media sold is what's known as "B" stock. Those are the discs that failed to meet the rigid quality standards of reputable manufacturers and are then sold off to merchandisers who sell them for cheap. Other manufacturers simply make low quality media by "cutting some corners" to gain market penetration via a lower price point. Often times, the cheap media often results in burning many a beer coaster or another to be added to your vast collection of table leg adjusters. In just about all cases, "bargain" media is no bargain in the end.
Although a DVD may look like a simple piece of cheap plastic, it has to be manufactured to extremely rigid and critical physical standards.
So how do I tell which is the best media to use ?
Well, it depends on your burner. Many manufacturer's sites have recommendations as to which media have been found to be compatible with their burner. But in general, there are some "brands" to be avoided like the plague. Digitalfaq.com has an informative page dedicated to this common question. It's worth reading before rushing out and purchasing a large quantity of DVD recordables.
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Undoubtedly, Memorex works for some people and if they like it then that is all that matters. But as with anything if enough people have problems then that product should not be recommended for use. I recorded on Memorex and it played on my standalone, but when I went back and scanned this disk against a TY the result was not good.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298
Since disks have come down in price, quality can now be had at the same price as cheap, why not pick the quality media, your burner deserves the best. After all, you obviously think a lot of the movie you are trying to back up so use a decent media for the best possible results. My two cents :~)
