HOW TO BURN PS2 GAMES
Ludikhris? Guides #1

What you need??..

1.) A DVD burner (for 1 to 1 copies)
2.) High quality DVD media
3.) A DVD burning software package
4.) SHARPEES!!!!!
5.) A method to play the games (modchip or swap disc)

1.) DVD burner
DVD burners have dropped in price quite a bit these days and you can get a good quality burner for $60-100 today. Do a search on www.froogle.com or www.pricewatch.com to find a good one. I suggest an 8X burner (though you don?t burn at that speed) and use a good brand. Pioneer and Sony have been pretty consistent in high quality burners. NEC and Light-on are a little more hit or miss but still offer good burners the majority of the time. Decide whats more important to you and make a choice.

2.) High Quality DVD Media
High quality media is of the up most importance when it comes to backing up your games. If you use bad media you can potentially blow your PS2s laser, LA chip, or both. In my case I used media that was not compatible with my drive and I had to ship my PS2 back to Sony for repairs (they footed the bill thank goodness). I recommend Taiyo Yudens (appropriate speed for you drive) and Riteks (also check for compatibility) My PS2 blew up from me burning Ritek G05s on my Pioneer A06, when they are not compatible.

3.) Burning Software Package
This is not quite as important. Some of the more popular ones are Nero, Alcohol 120%, and Blind Write. I use Nero the most so ill just lead you through the Nero process. Just make sure the burning software copies 1 to 1.

4.) SHARPEES!!
Ok as much as we all like them, labels are not good for out players. When you put adhesive stickers on you CD or DVDs this offsets the weight of the disc and can make the disc vary in speed and therefore put more stress on you laser. Youre best off buying printable media, or just investing in some sharpees and getting creative.

5.) Boot Method
So you cant just play a game when you burn it do to copy protection on the discs (more discussed in a future guide ?Booting PS2 backups?) you need a way to boot them. The most popular is swap discs for example Swap Magic discs. You can also use Mod Chips which need to be soldered in. There are also the DMS4 EZI chips that are modchips that don?t require soldering but can be dangerous to non pros to install. Look for future guides before you make a decision.

STEP BY STEP

This is using Nero Ultra edition?.. (not sure which one exactly but they are all similar)

1. Place the original in the source drive and close it (I will be doing ?Devil May Cry?)

Question: Can you backup a backup?

Answer: Yes you can they work just like originals.

Question: Can you backup every game?

Answer: Kind of, that is a little bit of an advanced question that requires a lot of detail. Baisically most games are on single layer DVDs known as DVD5s. These are cheap to purchase in DVD-R form. A few games: Xenosaga Episode1, GT4, Champions of Norrath, and God of War to name a few are on DVD9s which are dual layer and take more time and money to backup than what it is probably worth. Also these require (in most cases) a modchip to play and due to the variablility in different modchips I am not going to get into that. So yes 99% of all games will back up.

Question: My game is purple on the bottom what does that mean?

Answer: Purple games are CDs, you can back them up with CDRs, remember good media. Gold and Silver backed games are DVDs 5 or 9.

2. Ok now start your burning program, I am going to use Nero.
- You want to make sure it is in DVD mode and not CD mode by selecting the tabe in the upper left hand corner of the menu you first see.
- In the left hand margin where DVD-ISO is selected, move the selection to DVD COPY.
- Make sure under the ?Copy Options? tab that the source drive that holds the Disc to be backed up is selected.
- Deselect ?on the fly? in the copy options unless you are using 2 DVD drives burning with one and reading from another. It is still not recommended to write on the fly as it can give you bad burns (coasters).
- Choose a writing speed that is roughly half the maximum speed of your slowest component. (EG. 4X media, 4X Drive- burn at 2X. 8X drive 2X media, burn at 1X.) that rule of thumb has worked well for me in the past.

Question: What do you mean manipulate the game?

Answer: For some games they will not play with swap discs without a patch. There are many patches available here www.ps2nfo.com though you may need to register to get them. Also, there will need to be a patch inserted for online play as well if you choose that path. I will write another guide on that later. For most purposes you will not need to manipulate the game and can just burn the game without saving an image to the hard drive.

3. Once the reading is complete the drive will open and prompt to put in writeable media. Insert your blank DVD-R and close the drive. It should start right back up and finish in between 15min-1hour depending on burn speed.

4. Now that the burn has been successful, write the game name down on the disc (I also find a date can come in handy too) and try playing it in you PS2.

Question: The game brings me to a red screen that says ?Please Insert a Playstiona2 format disc?

Answer: The only way to play your backup games is with Swap Discs or a Modchip installed into you PS2 please look for future guides on this.

Please leave comments and questions at the bottom and I will edit this as needed. If you would like to add something to it please PM me with it and I will add it as necessary.

thanks for the guide.
I would like to add, though, that the software can be important.

In my case, for example, it only worked with DVD Decrypter. Nero 6 (Reloaded) did not work!

I used the same media TDK 4,7GB R- in both cases, and only Decrypter did it properly. A friend of mine, though, has been using Nero all the time and never had problems with it.

There are MANY mod chips. You can check a few out here:

www.modchip.ca
www.divineo.com

If you dont have any experience soldering or taking PS2s apart you are best of with swap tool and Swap Magic Discs
with those discs all you do is load it then when it asks you to you swap it out for a backup disc (using a special method via a slid card or a flip top lid)

For more information about the swap magic product run its name (in bold above) through a google search or a froogle search (for prices)

Its about $20 for the discs a bit more with a lid or a swap card.

Like I said before a new guide for how to boot the discs is in the works soon.

STEP 0) Turn your screen saver off and all other types of CPU consuming Programs.
STEP 1) Opening Alcohol 120%

Step 2) Browse for you file/files

Step 3.1.0) Burning PS2 CD. Browse to where the image file is and select it. This will put the information in the Acohol 120% as you see below. Now Click Next

Step 3.1.1) After Clicking next you'll see that you have some other options in the next window(As seen Below). THERE ARE ONLY 2 OPTIONS TO CHANGE. First change the Datatype to Playstation 2. If it's a playstation 1 game then change it to playstation. Now change your Speed to the Lowest it will go. in my case it's 4X is my lowest. Click start and watch some TV while it rips.

Step 3.2.0) Burning PS2 DVD. Browse to where the image file is and select it. This will put the information in the Acohol 120% as you see below. Now Click Next

Step 3.2.1) After Clicking next you'll see that you have some other options in the next window(As seen Below). THERE IS ONLY 1 OPTION THAT YOU NEED TO CHANGE. Change your Speed to the Lowest it will go. in my case it's 1X is my lowest. Click start and watch some TV while it rips.

That's all there is to it.

The Directions are for backup purpose only. Willingly using this direction to other uses are solely on the user and it's use. I take no responsibility in your actions.

I have a question about burning the games on dvd9's aka dual layers. So is there anyway to split the game into 2 dvds or more ? Or I have to buy a modchip that would play the dual layer dvds? Or is it possible to shrink it into one one layer dvds? Because my modchip wouldnt play dual layers.
