when backing up movies can i use any brand of dvd+r. Or is it a senstivie matter. I have seen some generic brands at some of the big electronic stores for good prices. Or do i just bite down and pay the big bucks for the name brands.

yes there is tons of bad media out there. I usually shy from buying in a store because you really don't know what you're getting. Consistant good quality media can be found at supermediastore.com, rima.com, meritline.com, and stay away from shop4tech.com. The best brand is Taiyo Yuden, I usually get mine from supermediastore.com.

My DVD writer can only take certain DVD-R or wutever
For example, it cant use Sony's and other formats, i use Ridata 8x DVD-R's which work really well with me

Can be a nightmare knowing which brands to buy. The cheap DVD blanks I have found to be OK in my burners (Pioneer and LG) but....cheap DVD+ disks in my stand alone recorder have been a real issue. These days I buy Verbatim (excellent) or TDK again outstanding and Imation - again really good. I do tend to stick to DVD+ blanks - for no other reason than they are the only disks I can burn in my stand alone recorder. Many older DVD players aren't able to read DVD+ format I have discovered.
In the end you get what you pay for - buy cheap and yes you will save money only if they all burn and play. In the last 12 months I have had only one TDK and Verbatim fail on me.

yeah you dont really save money buying cheap media even if they all burn because they probably wont playback in a matter of a few months so yes buy the good stuff as in TY,Verbatium or Ritek in that order and two grear places to buy online is supermediastore.com or meritline.com
