NCAA 2004 Dynasty Mode boot problems

Every game in my library works just fine EXCEPT NCAA 2004.

In fact, NCAA 2004 works fine in all modes except for the most important one: Dynasty Mode. I can load everything up - my profile, created team, rosters, etc. When I get to the screen to start a week's game the "loading" bar gets a bit more than halfway across then freezes. At this point the whole game is frozen and I have to reboot, go through the whole rigamarole to get to the same screen to load the week's game and then... it freezes again.

I have seen some fix solutions that involve putting tape onto the PS2 game itself. I did this and it worked for a few days. Now I am right back to the same place, spending hours (literally) trying to get this damn game to boot into Dynasty Mode!

Does anyone know what is up with this or a workaround? The game is a silver CD game if that matters. As I said, no other game is a problem, and it seems to only be this one aspect of this game. Other areas work fine. However, this one is the one I consider most important!

Any ideas or resources for help are appreciated!
