I have a dell dimision 4550 with the CD-rom on top and the CDR burner on the lower tray.I have a DVD burner -NEC 3520A not installed yet because i am a rookie at this installed thing.I have been reading here the last couple of days to gain any additional knowledge on the installation of this burner.PLEASE do not hold back any information on the best way to install this beast for the best performance and minor problems down the road.I am a novice but this is something i with to tackle,so please share important things i should do or should not do.Also should I remove both the CD rom top tray and CDburner bottom and purchase a dvd rom because its less of a hassle and stress on my dvd burner ..This is my first post so if i am at the wrong place for answers...please direct me to the correct place...

I too have a Dell 4550. I have DVD Rom installed in upper bay, and HP 640C installed in lower bay. Mine came through with DVD rom drive, and cdburner but I got rid of the burner because your new drive will do the same thing. I would invest in a DVD rom drive it makes ripping easier and less stress on the burner, at least that is my opinion. I have mine set up with rom as master and burner as slave and have had no problems, but a lot of other will do it the reverse way. Since that is the way Dell set it up I kept it. Just open your case remove your drive and install the new one, hopefully your computer will detect it. I also run two USB burners, a Plextor 716UF and a NEC 1300a all work fine. Good Luck :~)
