Hello everyone.
I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but a search yielded no answers.
I once heard that if you burn video files (.mpg, .avi, .divx, .ogm, what have you.) onto a blank DVD, that the quality of your video files will decrease as you put more on the DVD. Is this true?
And if so, can anyone give me some good quality thresholds? What I mean is say something like
1 GB of video files on DVD = Excellent quality
2 GB = Good quality
3 GB = Satisfactory quality
Etc.
Also, I wanted to find out what the best brand of blank DVD media is. By looking through here, I have found that Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are the best, but I would like some clarification on something.

There really isn?t a big difference in the type of DVD you would use + or- . It all boils down to personal preference or what most DVD?s players you own will support. If your stand alone DVD players are newer (within 2 years) chances are they will read either + or ? just fine. The most important factor when deciding media would be the brand or the manufacturer of the disc. This is a confusing one and talked about in depth all over the forum. So my recommendations to you would be these disks. Most will agree with this.. I hope :-)
Buying Online
Taiyo Yuden (genuine TY?s there are fakes out there so beware)
Ritek G04 brand these would be the x4 disks again beware of fakes
Prodisc 2nd class media, but newer media x8 seems to work well for people
Buying at the store (Best Buy, Office Depot, Wal-Mart ect.)
Fuji film ? Manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, MCC, Ricoh Japan, Prodisc, Fuji Film all fairly good manufacturers
Maxell ? Manufactured by Maxwell, Ritek, RicohJapan, Taiyo Yuden
TDK ? Manufactured by TDK, Ritek, RicohJapan, Maxwell, MCC, CMC Beware of the CMC brand
Verbatim ? MCC, CMC, TY, RicohJapan, Ritek again beware of CMC which it seems Verbatim is using more frequently lately.
Verbatim DVDs are made by a number of different manufacturers. Which manufacturer makes the best Verbatim DVDs? And how can I tell them apart?

wow... big post :)
ok, the only way quality will decrease is when you convert to DVD format. for example, when you convert a 4 hour film to dvd format the quality is likely to be poor wheras if you convert a 1 hour movie clip to DVD format the quality will be better (as long as you are restricting the target size to 4.3 gig)
as for media, TY are great but expensive, i keep a batch for films i will watch a lot and i buy traxdata (ritek's premiere brand) for all else.
watch where you buy your media from - TYs can be easily faked as they are generally unmarked.
you have to be really careful with the likes of TDK or makes that use different factories as quality can vary hugely. the verbatims you wanna use are the metal azo ones as they are much better than the cheaper ones (one lot being MCC (GREAT) and one lot being CMC (SHITE))
ritek disks can varey wildly and i have had some fakes in the past. that is why i use traxdata as they are their best disks. i would never buy arita (ritek) again as they gave me problems before with badly distributed dye etc

as i say it is a minefield. always buy reliable media from a good retailer. we have all learnt the hard way, i bought 100 TY fakes b4 xmas and i can only read 20 or so of them now :(

yup Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim get my vote too . if you buy online stick with supermedia store.com or meritline.com both are great to buy from and your sure not to get fakes and BTW supermedia store has 200 Taiyo Yuden on sale for 59.95 PLUS free shipping so you might check that out ,ends the 6th of this month.

Babelfish: Are the Verbatim Metal Azo discs MCC only, or are both types (Metal Azo and Non-Metal Azo.) made by both manufacturers? (MCC and CCM.)

By the way, does Supermediastore charge in Canadian or American dollars? How about Meritline? (I'm Canadian, so I would prefer to find a good Canadian site, rather than pay double for merchandise from an American site.)

yeah unfortanly american dollars ,theres some Canadian sites to buy from but iam not sure what there are do a search in here and your sure to find some and yes that deal at supermediastore is sold out and probably no rain checks either

the easiest way to explain the MCC/CMC question, is to only go for datalifeplus, as they're all top quality (not the older datalife). Verbatim used to use CMC manufacturers in the past
