hey, iv just gotten the nero burning rom and was wondering if there is any, what program in it would i use to turn an avi to dvd file?

Hi i use use Nero burning rom i use winavi to convert files to VOB then Nero to burn them winavi takes about 50 mins to convert hope this helps!

i use winavi too. I try and decode nerovision logs for other posters, though have no idea what nerovision actually does; i'll look it up, just never found a need for anything other than standard Nero up to now..

Ok,
I have WINAVI, I convert an AVI to DVD, i play the VOB file in the resultin VIDEO_TS directory, and it plays without a problem in PowerDVD.
I then use Nero to burn it, but seleting the VIDEO_TS folder, and the DVD has the sound, but the video is all garbled.
I figured, like has been suggested here, that DVD shirnk may encode it properly first, so i used it to burn the DVD with the same results.
I have burnt many DVD's using Nero and DVD Shrink before without a problem. Can anyone suggest something else I can try.
If it helps until i downloaded the K-Lite codec pack, i couldn't play the AVI version of the file with anything other than VideoLAN. If i did try to play the AVI, in another program, it looked the same as does the burnt DVD. Garbled video but sound ok.
After installing the K-Lite codec, the AVI version of the file plays without a problem.
Before installing K-Lite is did have both Divx and Xvid codecs installed.
Any ideas?

Pretty sure it's a codec problem.
Reason being, the resulting DVD was exactly looked exactly the same as the AVI played before i installed the K-Lite codec pack.
Also after posting, I tried a different approach.
Use WinAVI to convert to Mpeg-2, then use Nero Vision and add the Mpeg to the playlist. This took longer of course because Nero then re-encoded the file to DVD, but the dvd came out fine. I played it and everything was as it should be. So i definately think there is something odd going on when usin WinAVI to convert to DVD, or using WinAVI -> DVD then DVDShrink to re-encode. In both cases the VOB file plays in PowerDVD without a problem, but when Nero burns the file it looks (in a DVD player) as it did before the new codecs were installed.

hi
from what i read here on AD its hit and miss with winavi! not sure why but it occurs, i also use K-Lite mega pack on a freshly installed computer and no other codecs as this pack has everything inside it! even real audio and quicktime it does the lot! becareful of k-lite pack and k-lite all in one!
i use avi2dvd/CCE or film machine for avi to dvd!

nice heads up, i've used winavi a fair few times, but when it threw a fit the other day i tried VSO DivxToDVD. A tad slow for my liking, but at least i now got 2 things to choose from 'til i find something better (or just stay as i am)..

hi
i have found out over time being on AD that 99% of apps that take quite a while to encode are the best!!! there is always an exception to the rule as in divxtodvd (except for the small square bug!) which is dam fast and keeps small file sizes! wish they would update that app and add more features!
but the 2 apps above are good!
cucusoft takes ages to encode and sucks bigtime, and also found dvdsanta quilty not good!
just my opinion guys.....

hehehe i read them before and ran a mile...
as its 3/4 people wanting answers and it gets well confusing!
but AVI i would use avi2dvd or film machine! if wanting separate menu pionts do them 1 at a time (take forever!) but then you can load to TMPGEnc dvd author...
you may find an app that will catogorize each clip in making menu link? but me i havent done many multiple files only 1 or 2 at once for a film / menu creation...
but it may help!?

I tried WINAVI. I like the quality, but it appears to cut the screen. I have files with hard subttiles and the bottoms are cut off. Can Anyone help me with this? It was a 640x480 file. I used 4:3 ratio. VOB looks good on the computer. Thanks.

sorry i don't know too much about it. This is one program that i've found (for me) to either work well or not at all, so i just don't need to delve into it's inner workings. It might be worth trying the (free) VSO DivxToDVD instead..

Well I now keep it at, using TMPGEnc to encode everything, so it encode to DVD compliant mpeg.
then it works with Nero, or TMPCEnc DVD Author.
With one Divx AVI, I found that the encode, even with TMPG skip in parts. In the end I used DivFix to strip the indexes. This rendered useless for playing as most player couldn't handle it. But TMPGEnc managed to convert it without a hitch once the indexes were stripped.
That's an aside, but just a heads up

Hi, I've been trying to create a dvd for the last week or two, but nothing seems to work exactly right. I have followed the guide for AVI2DVD and used the Cinema Craft Encoder. The Result was A perfect DVD but after a while (an hour and a half) into the movie the sound is plays later than it should. It happend with Gladiator & Boondock Saints, and this is what they look like in AVIcodec.
Boondock Saints (AVI):
File : 696 MB (696 MB), duration: 1:44:00, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 44 %
Video : 601 MB, 808 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 512*256 (2.0:1), DIV3 = DivX v3 ;-) MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported
Audio : 94 MB, 127 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported
Gladiator (AVI):
File : 761 MB (761 MB), duration: 2:28:34, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 47 %
Video : 625 MB, 588 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 640*304 (2.21:1), DIV3 = DivX v3 ;-) MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported
Audio : 136 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported
After all of this I tried TMPGenc Plus v2.5 (registered) and when I get to the point of the encoding it indicates that it will take about 80 hours to encode.
I don't want to try Nero vision express 2 because it sounds dodgy and also looks dodgy!
I am tired of reading guides that does not give the results it's suppose to give, I want advice from a expert that has experience with encoding. please help me.

i like avi2dvd and not had a problem with sound yet, but rate this app very high also film machine is very simarlar maybe try that...
but your files i have not seen this MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), and the start quality: 44 % doesnt look good have you tried a higher rate file? and without low motion? i know its not the piont but am trying to say whatever you try may get simarlar results??? not sure
as we all know the first file has to be the best possible to get the best possible out!
how fast is your pc? as tmpgenc plus! should take 1/2 hours to get the file done on a 3gig cpu spec say? and dont take the initial counter as correct as it needs to run for 10/20 mins to sort the counter out to true time to encode! i use it!
also i dont use the wizard! i use the templates for ntsc or pal then drop the unlock template over the top!

Thanks Rotary, I am busy looking for a file without the low motion, and searching for a film machine download and trying everything else you told me. My pc specs is low (PIII 933mhz) but manage to encode Gladiator (CCE 4-pass) in 24 hours on AVI2DVD and Boondock Saints 17 hours. By the looks of it all my movies may be in low motion form & I havent downloaded a movie since the kazaa days(about 2-3 years ago), where would you recommend I go, if you don't mind telling me. oh and I am fimiliar with torrent download, just need to find the most reliable source.

For those who used winavi and then burned with Nero and had problems, what Nero did you use?
I read somewhere that the older versions of Nero has compatability issues with creating and burning dvd's.
I'm trying the winavi and Nero express 2 maneuvre, I will let everyone know if it works, if it does not work. Well I'm sure we can then scrap it in the options list.

I use Nero Vision Express 2.1.29, and it doesn't encode properly unless I convert first to MPEG.
I now use TMPGEnc DVD Author. I still need to re-encode into mpeg first, but from there it encodes properly to DVD. It then allows me to burn directly to DVD without using Nero and hence without Nero's screwing around with the files.
